Job summary

MSA Safety is seeking a quality engineer to join our manufacturing and engineering teams to drive quality improvements across global operations. You will analyze data, lead root-cause analyses, and develop robust controls.

Ideal candidates have ABET-accredited engineering degree, experience in quality environments, and knowledge of PFMEA, Control Plans, and ISO 9001. Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitate cross-functional quality improvement initiatives, including warranty and customer complaint reduction, and provide technical quality expertise to engineering, manufacturing, and functional teams.
  • Analyze product and manufacturing quality data and metrics to identify trends, systemic issues, and opportunities to improve customer satisfaction and business performance.
  • Lead or support structured problem-solving activities to identify root causes, implement effective corrective actions, and prevent recurrence of product and process issues.
  • Investigate customer concerns and product quality issues, partnering with Customer Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and other functional teams to ensure timely and effective resolution.
  • Drive consistent quality execution across manufacturing sites by promoting standardized quality practices, processes, tools, and performance expectations.
  • Support product and process risk prevention through quality planning, risk assessment, PFMEA, Control Plans, inspection strategies, and process controls.
  • Monitor and communicate quality performance, including defects, scrap, rework, customer concerns, warranty/field performance, and other key quality metrics.
  • Support the effectiveness and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System through audits, corrective actions, process compliance, documentation, and other continuous improvement activities.
  • Identify opportunities to standardize and continuously improve quality processes across global manufacturing operations.
  • Develop organizational quality capability through training, coaching, and application of structured problem-solving and quality methodologies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related field)
Experience and Technical Knowledge:
  • Experience in a manufacturing, engineering, operations, or quality environment.
  • Working knowledge of structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, A3, DMAIC, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of root-cause analysis, corrective action, and preventive action principles.
  • Understanding of quality planning and risk-management tools, including PFMEA, Control Plans, process controls, and work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 or similar Quality Management System requirements.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, interpret, and present quality data using tools such as Excel, statistical tools, quality databases, or other data-analytics platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively in cross-functional and global teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, process discipline, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in product quality, customer quality, warranty, or field quality.
  • Experience working with complex products, regulated products, or safety-critical applications.
  • Experience with new product development and design quality, including Design FMEA, design verification/validation, or APQP.
  • Experience working across multiple manufacturing sites or in a global organization.
  • Experience leading cross-functional quality improvement initiatives without direct authority.
  • Experience training or coaching others in quality tools, problem solving, or QMS requirements.
  • Professional certification such as ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Six Sigma certification, or equivalent.

The level of this position will be determined based on the candidate’s relevant experience, technical expertise, problem-solving capability, independence, and demonstrated scope of responsibility.

Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited program.

This position will be considered at three different career levels based upon experience and education:

  • Level one (Staff I): 0 years of relevant industry experience
  • Level two (Staff II): 2 years of relevant industry experience
  • Level three (Staff III): 3+years of relevant industry experience
