The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS's growth around the world, as well as ensuring regulatory compliance and highest‑level environmental performance of AWS's data center global operations. The Environmental team has responsibility for managing Environmental requirements and risk from site selection through to decommissioning. This role requires a highly skilled professional to manage complex, ambiguous biodiversity programmatic challenges and initiatives from the ground up across organizational boundaries.

The ideal candidate must have experience leading biodiversity program initiatives, influencing stakeholders, and working independently while seeking guidance when needed. Strong strategic and tactical skills are essential, including balancing short and long‑term needs, mitigating risks, and delivering simplified solutions. Excellent communication skills are crucial, with the ability to present to senior leadership and write strategic narratives. The role involves mentoring, recruitment, and process improvement. Cross‑functional collaboration and consensus‑building are key. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is vital, focusing on challenging the status quo and creating inclusive products. The successful candidate will significantly impact long‑term organizational goals and model best practices in their domain, driving change and innovation across the organization.

Key job responsibilities

Leadership and commitment. Ensure the Biodiversity program evolves to meet changing organizational needs, stakeholder expectations, and environmental challenges, while securing necessary resources and support for continuous improvement. Collaborate with wider environmental, design, real estate, sustainability and operations teams to perform reviews and updates needed to ensure the biodiversity program remains relevant and effective.

Risk management and planning. Support the ongoing identification and assessment of biodiversity related environmental risks across the full AWS DC lifecycle--from site selection, through due diligence, design, permitting, operations and decommissioning. Develop and implement strategic plans to address significant environmental risks while creating opportunities for positive biodiversity outcomes--setting ambitious yet achievable improvements.

Implementation and operation. Oversee the design and deployment of our biodiversity program to enhance environmental performance and ensure compliance with legal and other requirements at local, regional, global levels. Lead associated environmental training and awareness programs to embed skills throughout the organization.

Performance evaluation. Establish and manage a robust system for monitoring, measuring, and reporting performance of the biodiversity program. Conduct regular assessments of tools and processes being used by the environmental team, collate and analyze biodiversity data to identify trends, gaps, and areas for improvement. Present performance reports and recommendations to top management.

Continual improvement. Drive the ongoing enhancement of the biodiversity program leading management reviews, implementing corrective and preventative actions, and identifying innovative approaches to improve environmental performance.
