Job summary

The City of Charlotte is seeking a GIS Technician for the Storm Water Services Department to document inlet inspections in the field using mobile software and to support GIS drainage inventory accuracy.

You will measure stormwater infrastructure, prepare cartographic exhibits, and manage work orders in Cityworks while collaborating with the inspection crew. Safety and independent field work are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or related field and one year of relevant experience.
  • Working proficiency with the ESRI ArcGIS suite.
  • Familiarity with Cityworks or other work order management systems.
  • Excellent spatial ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans and technical drawings.

This position will utilize mobile technology to document the inspection and cleaning of street inlets and support the maintenance of the GIS drainage inventory by documenting errors and omissions observed in the field. The position works primarily in the field as part of an inlet inspection crew with scheduled first shift hours.**The salary for this position is: $25.00-$30.55/hr, Commensurate with Experience.****Major Duties and Responsibilities:*** Utilize mobile software to document inlet inspection activity and observations.* Measure and document physical characteristics of stormwater infrastructure.* Prepare cartographic exhibits.* Monitor, create, and manage work orders in the Cityworks system.* Maintain hardware and field equipment.* Provide support to internal and external customers.* Perform other duties as assigned.**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:*** Working proficiency with the ESRI ArcGIS application suite.* Basic understanding of GIS principles and concepts including database structure, data management, analysis techniques.* Familiarity with Cityworks or other work order management systems.* Strong understanding of stormwater systems and terminology.* Ability to interpret construction plans and technical drawings.* Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office products.* Excellent spatial ability and attention to detail.* Effective verbal and written communication skills.* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.* Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.* Ability to diagnose and solve problems.**Preferred Qualifications:*** Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or related field and one (1) year of relevant experience.* Working proficiency with the ESRI ArcGIS suite of products.**Minimum Qualifications:*** High School Graduate or Equivalent and three years related work experience.OR* Associate’s degree with one-year related work experience.OR* Bachelor's Degree**Other Requirements:**This position requires significant judgment in traveling; traversing difficult terrain, retaining structures, barriers, and various urban/rural conditions; encountering a wide range of animals, insects, vegetation, and weather conditions; interacting with public; and experiencing unforeseen conditions/situations in accessing and entering drainage features within the Right of Way, public, and private property. This position requires that the selected candidate be able to walk at least 3 miles per day, stand for at least 8 hours per day, lift, push and pull up to 100 pounds multiple times a day, climb a ladder, bend, crawl and stoop, crawl, traverse and climb difficult Piedmont terrain and waterways in an urban environment, perform work under adverse weather and environmental conditions. The ability to traverse encountered field conditions as part of this position’s duties and responsibilities is a condition of employment. Employee must be able to work occasional overtime, various shift hours. Employee must obtain and maintain trainings and certifications essential to the work assignment as directed.**CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
