The Bureau of Environmental Surveillance and Policy (BESP) in the NYC Health Department seeks a GIS Analyst to lead field data collection tooling, train staff, and ensure data quality across multiple bureaus. You will work with ArcGIS Online/Pro, Survey123, and Field Maps, and automate workflows with ArcPy.
Reporting to the GIS Director, the role emphasizes data-driven mapping, spatial analysis, and cross-bureau collaboration to support healthy environments for all New Yorkers.
The Bureau of Environmental Surveillance and Policy (BESP) in EH works to ground Health Department programs and policy in science and law to support a healthy and equitable natural, built, and occupational environment for all New Yorkers. We promote environmental health through legal and data-driven program support, using innovative methods to track environmental determinants of health with a focus on New Yorkers disproportionately impacted by environmental risk. We share data and research findings to encourage evidence-based decision making, and partner with communities in community science and outreach to address stakeholder concerns and empower residents.
The GIS Analyst supports field data collection for programs across the Division of Environmental Health including building and maintaining tools such as ESRI’s Survey123 and Field Maps for inspectional staff in the Bureau of Food Safety and other bureaus.
Reporting to the Director of GIS in Environmental Health, the GIS Analyst trains field staff on these tools, reviews incoming field data for quality and accuracy, and works across the broader ArcGIS platform, including ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro, to support mapping and analysis needs.
The GIS Analyst also uses Python and ArcPy to automate recurring GIS processes and improve the efficiency of data workflows.
