Job summary

Sylvania in Beverly, MA seeks an assistant coach to support the head coach in all aspects of the athletic program. Responsibilities include instruction, supervision, and student-athlete development across practices and games.

Ideal candidates have prior coaching or playing experience, strong communication, and organizational skills. A bachelor’s degree is preferred and MIAA certification or the ability to obtain it within required timelines is expected.

Qualifications

• Previous playing and/or coaching experience in the assigned sport preferred.
• Knowledge of the assigned sport, including rules, strategies and skill development.
• Ability to work effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff and community members.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
• MIAA Coaching Education certification required or ability to obtain certification within required timelines.
• CPR/First Aid certification preferred or required based on district expectations.

Responsibilities

• Assist head coach in all aspects of the athletic program, including instruction, supervision and student-athlete development.
• Support practices, competitions and team activities as directed by the Head Coach.
• Maintain squad lists, injury reports, game results and incident reports.
• Promote academic achievement, citizenship and sportsmanship among student-athletes.
• Monitor athlete academic eligibility requirements.
• Assist with equipment, uniforms, and supplies; inventory management.
• Ensure safety and condition of athletic facilities and equipment.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, staff and administration.
• Enforce discipline and conduct consistent with school and athletic department expectations.
• Assist with compliance with Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules and regulations.

Job description

Position Summary

• All coaching positions are seasonal, one-year appointments subject to reappointment.
• Assists head coach in all aspects of the athletic program, including instruction, supervision, student-athlete development and program operations.
• Supports the promotion of teamwork, sportsmanship, academic achievement and adherence to school and MIAA expectations.

Essential Responsibilities

• Directly responsible to the Head Coach.
• Assist in coaching individual participants in the skills necessary for achievement in the assigned sport.
• Assist with practices, competitions, and team activities as directed by the Head Coach.
• Support supervision of student-athletes during practices, contests, travel and related activities.
• Assist in maintaining accurate records including squad lists, injury reports, game results, incident reports and physical examination records.
• Support the promotion of academic achievement, citizenship, sportsmanship and positive behavior among student-athletes.
• Assist in monitoring athlete academic eligibility requirements.
• Assist with recommendations for equipment, uniforms and supplies.
• Help oversee the safety and condition of athletic facilities and equipment while students are present.
• Conduct regular checks of equipment and report safety concerns to the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
• Enforce discipline and appropriate conduct consistent with school and athletic department expectations.
• Assist in ensuring compliance with all Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) rules and regulations.
• Assist with the distribution, collection, and inventory of uniforms and equipment.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, staff and administration.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Principal or Athletic Director in the best interest of the school and athletic program.

Compensation

• Compensation is set in accordance with the Beverly Teachers Association Unit A collective bargaining agreement.
