Job Description

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. The coach must continually upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observation, and consultation. The position has a strong community impact and requires balancing performance goals with sportsmanship and student well‑being.

Reports to

Reports to: Athletic director and high school principals. The head coach advises, coordinates, and supports high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches.

Essential Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Establish foundational philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by assistants. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth through clinic attendance.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, analyze staff effectiveness, and evaluate assistants at season end.
  • Maintain discipline, address grievances, and enhance morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
  • Assist in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
  • Prepare for sport events or practices, adhere to scheduled facility times, and coordinate programs with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation to meet state and system requirements for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Safeguard and protect assigned equipment sites.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Participate in budgeting with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season.
  • Accountable for all equipment and recover costs of lost or not returned items.
  • Arrange issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment; submit annual inventory and current records.
  • Identify and mark all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing access.
  • Ensure athletes use authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking general cleanliness.
  • Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks when custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property in athletes.
  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes from other sports and external outreach via media or youth programs.
  • Prepare oral or written releases for local media.
  • Maintain good public relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to media about schedules, tournaments, and results.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serve as a mentor to each athlete, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor students’ grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safety for all participants during practices, games, and travel.
  • Communicate training rules, schedules, calendars, and regulations to athletes and parents.
  • Follow injury, medical, and emergency protocols.
  • Direct the SPS trainer to complete injury paperwork and submit within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline and due‑process procedures; involve parents and the athletic director when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The coach must organize and supervise the entire sports program, have prior coaching experience in the assigned (or a major) sport, and possess substantial knowledge of the sport’s technical aspects. Continuous learning of new theories and procedures is required. The coach must act as an appropriate role model for student athletes.
