Job summary

Independencefamilyanimalcare seeks a Gilt Development Unit Lead to supervise gilt care, selection, health management, and biosecurity across the breeding herd.

You will lead staff, maintain records, and coordinate with production to support reproductive performance while ensuring animal welfare and farm efficiency. Weekend rotations and travel may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• 2+ years in swine production, preferably gilt development.
• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Knowledge of gilt selection, breeding, and herd health management.
• Able to perform physically demanding tasks.
• Familiarity with swine industry regulations and biosecurity protocols.
• Weekend rotation and travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the daily care, feeding, and health of developing gilts.
• Implement gilt selection criteria for high-quality replacement females.
• Address health issues promptly through proper treatment and management.
• Manage acclimation and isolation protocols for incoming gilts.
• Monitor gilt growth, reproductive performance, and development.
• Enforce biosecurity to prevent disease.
• Maintain records of gilt inventories, health treatments, and reproduction.
• Ensure compliance with policies and animal welfare regulations.
• Maintain cleanliness of barns, feeding systems, ventilation.
• Monitor environmental conditions for animal comfort and growth.
• Identify and report equipment malfunctions or facility needs.
