Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Ensure GI equipment is available, clean, maintained, and serviced as needed.
  • Document procedures, equipment usage, and inventory in EMR systems.
  • Collaborate with nurses and physicians for patient care before, during, and after GI procedures.
  • Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards; participate in QA activities.
  • Support education and training of new staff on GI procedures and equipment.

Job Summary / Purpose

The Endoscopy Technician reports to the Nurse Manager and is responsible for assisting surgeons/gastroenterologists/physicians and other medical staff in preparation and performance of surgical/endoscopy procedures by processing and furnishing sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment and services for the care and treatment of patients.

Key Responsibilities
Procedural Assistance
  • Provide technical support and assistance during GI procedures, including but not limited to endoscopies, colonoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Assist healthcare providers in positioning patients, preparing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs during procedures.
Equipment Management
  • Ensure the availability, functionality, and cleanliness of GI equipment and instrumentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed to maintain optimal performance and safety standards.
Patient Care Coordination
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care before, during, and after GI procedures.
  • Assist in patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery, ensuring patient comfort, safety, and confidentiality at all times.
Documentation and Record‑keeping
  • Accurately document procedural details, patient information, and equipment usage in electronic medical records (EMR) systems or other designated documentation platforms.
  • Maintain thorough and organized records of procedures, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels to support quality assurance and compliance efforts.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
  • Adhere to established protocols, policies, and procedures related to GI procedures, infection control, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection control audits, and regulatory inspections to ensure adherence to standards of care and best practices.
Education and Training
  • Stay informed about advancements in GI technology, procedures, and equipment through ongoing education and professional development activities.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new staff members, residents, and fellows on GI procedures, equipment usage, and safety protocols.
Minimum Training and Education
  • At least a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • GI experience required.
  • At least one year of patient care experience in a health care facility; or a Certified Nursing Assistant; or successful completion of a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant course at an accredited institution or equivalent training; or EMT or Paramedic certification; or a Bachelor's degree.
  • Successful completion of the SGNA modules for GI Technical Specialist within a specified time frame desired.
  • Possess ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and ability to make accurate physical observation of patients.
  • Applicant must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer skills required.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
  • Basic Life Support required upon hire.
  • Thereafter, must maintain a Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

  • Credentials: Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
