Job summary

The Federal Highway Administration's Geotechnical Laboratory is seeking a Geotechnical Research Engineer - Level 2 to advance soil-structure interaction research for U.S. transportation infrastructure.

This role involves data-driven analysis, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling, with opportunities to publish and contribute to policy-relevant outcomes. A master's in geotechnical engineering plus hands-on lab/field experience is required; PhD is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on geotechnical lab/field research experience beyond degree requirements.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or R for engineering analytics.
  • Record of technical publications and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of research workplans focused on bridge-related soil-structure interaction.
  • Conduct standard and advanced geotechnical lab tests per ASTM/AASHTO standards.
  • Apply machine learning and data analytics to interpret lab and field datasets.
  • Document procedures, prepare FHWA reports, and contribute to publications.
  • Assist with equipment setup, safety, and procurement; participate in progress meetings.
