The Geotechnical Project Engineer leads geotechnical investigations from proposal through final report for transportation, public works, industrial, commercial, and residential projects. You will scope and price work, direct field and laboratory programs, perform and review engineering analyses, author geotechnical reports, and serve as the primary technical contact for clients, owners, and design teams. This is a hands‑on engineering leadership role in a growing, engineer‑led firm with a direct line to ownership.
Manage the full lifecycle of geotechnical projects: proposal and fee development, scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, execution, invoicing, and closeout.
Plan subsurface exploration programs, including boring layouts, sampling, CPT, and in‑situ testing, and coordinate with the drilling crew, utility locating, and site access.
Direct and review laboratory testing programs (classification, Atterberg limits, consolidation, shear strength, swell, CBR, resilient modulus) and interpret results.
Perform and check engineering analyses: bearing capacity, settlement, shallow and deep foundations (drilled shafts, driven piles, auger‑cast piles), slope stability, lateral earth pressures, retaining walls, seepage, and expansive soil evaluation per PVR methods.
Develop pavement designs for TxDOT, City of Houston, Harris County, and private clients using TxDOT FPS and AASHTO methods.
Author, review, and seal geotechnical engineering reports, foundation recommendations, and technical memoranda that meet TxDOT, City of Houston, Harris County, and Port Houston standards.
Supervise and mentor staff engineers, EITs, and field technicians, including assigning work, reviewing calculations, and supporting their licensure.
Maintain client relationships, attend design and pre‑construction meetings, respond to RFIs, and support construction‑phase geotechnical observation.
Lead business development for the geotechnical group: identify opportunities, prepare SOQs and proposals, and grow repeat work with existing clients.
Ensure projects comply with the firm's ISO/IEC 17025 quality system, health and safety program, and professional standards of care.
Monitor project financials, including budget‑to‑actual, utilization, change orders, and collections.
Required qualifications
Master of Science or PhD in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
Minimum 3 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience, including at least 2 years managing projects, budgets, and client relationships.
Working knowledge of Texas geology and expansive clay behavior, and of TxDOT, City of Houston, and Harris County geotechnical standards.
Proficiency with geotechnical analysis software such as gINT, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, APILE, Slide or SLOPE/W, Settle3, and TxDOT FPS, plus AutoCAD or Civil 3D and Microsoft Office.
Strong technical writing skills and demonstrated ability to produce sealed engineering reports.
Valid Texas driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to travel to project sites and work outdoors as needed.
Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred qualifications
Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license, or EIT/FE certification with ability to obtain Texas PE within 12 months.
Professional certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour Construction, TxDOT precertification in geotechnical work categories, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, NICET Geotechnical, or Nuclear Gauge Safety.
Experience with deep foundation load testing, instrumentation, ground improvement, and forensic geotechnical evaluations.
Prior responsibility for proposal pricing and business development.
