Job summary

ECS Group of Companies is seeking a Geotechnical Technician based in Carrollton, Texas. This role involves performing field and laboratory tests on soil, aggregates, and concrete, along with conducting observations on construction sites. The ideal candidate should have a high school diploma or GED, with a preference for candidates with a BS in Civil Engineering.

The position requires physical strength for lifting and outdoor work under varying weather conditions. ECS supports training and advancement to enhance the skills of its technicians.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Layout borings and test pits using conventional surveying and GPS, observe and classify test pits and soils, perform hand auger borings, DCP testing, soil logging, and other geotechnical field work.
  • Classify samples obtained from drilling operations and reduce GPS and other geotechnical data for utilization and production.
  • Complete department administrative duties as needed.
  • Work in the construction materials testing department.
  • In this capacity, forefield work on active construction sites involves field observation, testing, sampling, and inspection of soil, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement. (Note: All disciplines may not be encountered on every project.)
  • Under the direction of staff professionals/project managers, perform routine field and/or laboratory tests and assist with more complex tasks as required.
  • Involve in calculations, data reduction of test results, and drafting as required.
  • Maintain daily communication with site contractors, technicians, and project managers.
  • ECS will train candidates in our methodology to conduct observations, inspections, and testing of building/construction projects and to document findings in accordance with accepted engineering practice. A sound understanding of construction practices is required.
  • As experience increases, ECS encourages and assists technicians to advance competence and skills through internal and external training programs and certifications (ACI, ASNT, AWS, ICC, NICET, NRCA, IIBEC, State DOTs, WACEL, etc.).
Work Environment

The employee will be regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. Noise levels will typically be moderate to moderately loud. Employees may also be exposed to high, precarious places. Some weekend and overtime work may be required; overnight travel may be required with this position.

Physical Requirements

These physical demands are representative of what a technician may encounter in the field and are essential functions of the position. Employees will be involved primarily with field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing and potentially repetitive motions. They must have the ability to use hands for handling, feel, reach, climb, balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel, and sit. The ability to see and smell, including close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth vision, and focus is required. Employees may need to drive hundreds of miles per day. Lifting requirements: regularly lift or move up to 40 pounds (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift or move 60–80 pounds (soil and sand samples, nuclear density equipment); occasionally move over 100 pounds (e.g., a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples). Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university preferred.
  • 0–2 years of experience.
  • Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and follow all local and state laws, road/driving regulations, and company policies.
  • Must be able to carry 40–70 lbs multiple times a day or occasionally lift 85 lbs to waist height.
