Job summary

Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates invites Summer Interns to join our Ashland, VA office. You will support field teams on construction materials testing and participate in documentation of results, with Level 2 interns assisting in reports and soil classification.

Level 1 targets freshmen/sophomores; Level 2 adds office tasks and collaboration with professionals. A strong emphasis on safety, learning, and hands-on experience in geotechnical engineering is offered.

Qualifications

• Reliable vehicle for construction sites with a valid driver's license.
• Pre-employment drug screening and background check.
• Ability to lift/move up to 60–80 pounds.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic math and use of measurement tools.
• Geotechnical or geology/engineering students encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Level 1 interns perform field tasks on construction materials testing.
• Field observation, sampling, testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt and steel placement.
• Document results clearly and concisely.
• Level 2 interns mix Level 1 tasks with office work such as report creation and soil classification.
