Job summary

WSP is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Lead for its Geotechnical and Tunneling Team. The role supports multiple New England offices including Boston, MA, with leadership over design and field projects.

You will oversee cross-functional teams, develop reports, and advance geotechnical analysis for bridges, tunnels, and underground structures while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with geotechnical or tunneling focus is required.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant experience in geotechnical or tunneling projects.
  • Engineer license is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D and geotechnical design software.
  • Willingness to travel and work in field.
  • Able to pass WSP motor vehicle screening.
  • Commitment to safety and company policies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform geotechnical engineering design and analyses for bridges, buildings, tunnels, and retaining walls.
  • Prepare geotechnical memoranda, data reports, and design reports.
  • Develop technical reports and presentations explaining concepts and recommendations.
  • Coordinate geotechnical work across New England and other areas.
  • Manage design and construction aspects of infrastructure projects from inception to completion.
  • Incorporate advanced technologies and modeling techniques into designs.
  • Oversee cross-functional teams including budgets and resource tracking.
  • Review and approve infrastructure design plans for data integrity and compliance.
  • Create data visualizations for interpretation of complex findings.
  • Stay current with latest geotechnical practices and techniques.

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Geotechnical Engineering Lead for our Geotechnical and Tunneling Team!

This position can sit out of the following WSP offices:

  • Boston, MA
  • North Providence, RI
  • Glastonbury, CT
  • Worcester, MA
  • Shelton, CT
  • Merrimack, NH
  • Other WSP offices throughout New England can be considered.
Job Duties
  • Perform geotechnical engineering design and analyses for bridges, buildings, tunnels, underground structures, and retaining walls under minimal supervision of senior engineers
  • Prepare/draft geotechnical memoranda, data reports and design reports
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address design, and/or construction issues or opportunities. Collaborate with other disciplines and project partners
  • Assist to develop and coordinate geotechnical work in New England and other areas
  • Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, laying out installations, foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, and other systems that are made or supported by soil or rock.
  • Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality or end-users, transportation systems, structures, and the implementation of future-ready solutions with geotechnical engineering design standards.
  • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, permit applications, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Coordinate, review and approve infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
  • Remain current in latest geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering, or a closely-related field
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant experience
  • Engineer license required.
  • Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering and working knowledge of related disciplines (Structures, Civil, and/or Environmental)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GeoSlope, Plaxis, Settle, LPILE, GROUP, GRLWEAP, SEEP/W, RockSciences Software, etc), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and other tools.
  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in work environment
  • Ability and willingness to travel and perform field work
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation - Massachusetts only

Expected Salary: $122,000 - $182,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
