Job summary

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking a Summer 2027 Geotechnical Engineering Internship in our Waltham office. You will work alongside industry-leading experts to gain hands-on experience applying classroom knowledge to real-world geotechnical challenges.

We are looking for current students enrolled in civil engineering who are enthusiastic about geotechnical engineering, maintain strong grades, and want to develop technical and communication skills in a consulting environment.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled and plan to complete a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
• Interest in geotechnical engineering.
• Maintain high grades in their studies.
• Interest in learning through hands-on work experience in a consulting engineering environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with and develop your engineering skills on a breadth of projects that may include: engineering investigations, analyses, and design of structures including foundations, retaining structures, and earthworks.
• Analyses related to soil settlement, slope stability, groundwater flow, and seepage; evaluate embankments and tunnels.
• Analyses and forensic evaluations of failed or deteriorated structures.
• Support construction operations for contractors and rehabilitation projects.
• Collaborate with SGH groups on slope and shoreline stabilization and drainage systems.
• Organize field data and assist with research to facilitate analysis and repair design.
• Perform analysis under supervision using hand calculations and software.
• Assist with preparing client deliverables, including construction documents and reports.

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
