Geotechnical Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Geotechnical Engineer to join a growing engineering team in Troy, Michigan. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is comfortable working independently while also contributing within a fast-paced, collaborative project environment.

The successful candidate will preferably bring experience supporting paving, utility, and structural projects and demonstrate a practical, solutions-oriented approach to engineering challenges. A strong understanding of applicable local, state, and federal regulations, along with working knowledge of ASTM, MDOT, and AASHTO standards and procedures, is highly valued.

The role combines field and office responsibilities, including site investigations, data collection, engineering analysis, project coordination, client communication, proposal development, and technical report preparation.

Opportunities are available for both entry-level and experienced geotechnical engineers, with responsibilities and compensation aligned with the selected candidate's level of experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute geotechnical engineering assignments, including field exploration, engineering analysis, laboratory services, and report preparation.
  • Prepare project proposals, technical reports, recommendations, and other project documentation to meet client and company expectations.
  • Perform and support field and laboratory testing activities.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and organize geotechnical data.
  • Provide sound engineering recommendations based on site conditions, test results, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage geotechnical projects through various stages of design and construction.
  • Provide technical oversight for geotechnical work during both design and construction phases.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to junior engineers and field technicians when required.
  • Develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with clients.
  • Support project profitability through effective budgeting, pricing, resource utilization, scheduling, and cost control.
  • Represent the organization professionally and communicate its engineering capabilities and technical strengths to existing and prospective clients.
  • Identify and communicate potential business opportunities, resource needs, competitive developments, and relevant regulatory or technology changes to company leadership.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, preferably with a geotechnical emphasis.
  • Successful completion of the FE exam is preferred, along with an intention to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • 1–10 years of geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Experience with paving and structural projects is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ASTM, MDOT, and AASHTO standards and procedures.
  • Strong project coordination and project management capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, technical teams, contractors, and field personnel.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including spreadsheet development, data organization, and technical report generation.
  • Willingness to travel and occasionally work flexible hours or shifts to accommodate project and client requirements.
