Job summary

Intertek Building & Construction in Tampa, FL is seeking a Geotechnical Driller Assistant to join our drilling team. You will assist with soil drilling, rock sampling, and rig operations to support geotechnical engineering projects.

The role requires interaction with geotechnical engineers and project managers, preparation of tooling, and adherence to safety practices. Travel up to 5% and overtime may be required; HS education preferred and we will train for drilling operations.

• Identify boring locations using GPS equipment.
• Retrieve and log soil/rock samples.
• Maintain and clean equipment; assist site cleanup.

What are we looking for?

The Driller Assistant is responsible for working on a drilling team to operate various drill rigs to collect soil and rock samples for geotechnical engineering purposes.

What you’ll do:

• Assist with soil drilling, rock coring, soil/rock sampling, classifications, in-situ testing, and monitoring well installation
• Assist in the operations of various drilling rigs
• Operate support vehicle equipment
• Assists Driller to manipulate, load, and unload drill rig tooling
• Interact with geotechnical engineers and project managers to understand drilling assignments and to relate field information to the office
• Prepare tooling and supplies for the day’s tasks
• Assist in assembling and disassembling drill tooling potentially including but not limited to the following: solid-flight augers, hollow-stem augers, rock core barrel assembly kits, Shelby tube samplers, split-spoon samples, etc.
• Assists with the identification of boring locations through the use of GPS equipment
• Retrieval and logging of soil/rock samples
• Cleaning and maintaining equipment as well as assisting in site clean up responsibilities
• Must be aware of, and adhere to, safety practices and policies to ensure your own safety, as well as the safety of others who may be affected by your actions at work

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:

• Ability to communicate and interact effectively in verbal & written communication
• Requires basic math skills
• Ability to receive work instructions and follow tasks
• Must be able to work off shifts and overtime
• Must be able to travel up to 5% of the time
• Valid Driver’s License and reliable driving record (required)

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications:

• HS Education or Equivalent (preferred)
• Experience assisting with drilling operations is preferred, but not required – WE WILL TRAIN!

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift, move, push and pull up to 50 pounds frequently. Occasionally, over 50 pounds with assistance
• Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, (hearing) and to make the discriminations in sound
• Ability to kneel and squat occasionally
• Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (hot and cold) for the majority of the day
• Ability to climb occasionally
