Job description

Luminary helps engineering companies be more competitive by getting to market faster, creating new, better products, and reducing development risk. We do this with our Physics AI platform, the fastest and easiest way to build and deploy models to understand and instantly predict physical reality with precision. Customers span industries from automotive and aerospace, to leading sporting equipment providers, including Otto Aviation, Joby Aviation, Piper Aircraft and Trek Bikes. Luminary is a Series B company and is headquartered in San Mateo, California.

In this role, you will:
  • Develop and productize novel computational geometry handling and meshing approaches for physics simulation (e.g., CFD, structural analysis, thermal simulation) and Physics AI workflows with a focus on automation.
  • Drive critical organizational initiatives by solving the toughest technical challenges related to geometry ingestion and mesh generation, delivering measurable value to customers.
  • Contribute to the long-term vision for geometry and meshing technology that is aligned with organizational goals.
  • Proactively identify and resolve significant technical risks to the company's long-term success, providing technical guidance to leadership on roadmapping and key technical trade-offs.
  • Contribute to cross-functional teams focusing on customer-centric problem solving.
  • Balance research innovation with practical implementation to enable new product capabilities.
Who you are:
  • Credentials / Experience: Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics, Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline; 5+ years of software development experience (post PhD) in computational geometry and/or meshing with a strong track record of delivering customer value.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep, recognized expertise in computational geometry, meshing, or a related broad domain. Primary emphasis on experience with 3D, complex geometry from realistic, industry-grade applications. Exhibits flexibility in technical approach to ensure successful outcomes, regardless of physics domain or industry vertical.
  • Programming: Strong experience in writing production-level, performant code in C++ (C++17 or later). Experience with parallel programming via shared memory (OMP), MPI for distributed computing, or CUDA for GPUs is a plus. Proficient in Python. Enterprise-level software development and testing practices.
  • Operates at the intersection of business strategy and engineering reality, demonstrating the ability to work with customers directly to deliver successful outcomes while managing risks.
  • Acts as a force multiplier across the organization, evidenced by mentorship and sponsorship of colleagues toward greater ownership.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced startup environment, working collaboratively with low ego and clear communication.
  • Passionate about applying computational physics and AI to solve real-world engineering challenges.
