Job Description

This is a remote position with 30%-50% travel for fieldwork assignments. The ideal candidate will live in the Southeastern/Mid-Atlantic region of the US.

Summary:

The position requires a dynamic individual with a geology background, the ability to work flexible hours (primarily Monday through Friday), and a willingness to travel periodically. The role is highly active and involves various field assignments related to contaminated site characterization, monitoring, remediation, and office tasks such as preparing planning and reporting documents. Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations is required for higher-level positions. The candidate should be eager to advance their career and engage in diverse tasks including sampling groundwater, soil, sediment, surface water, and air for environmental contaminants; gathering and recording environmental data; overseeing groundwater monitoring well installation; classifying soils; using GPS; tabulating data; and preparing work plans and field reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conducting contaminated site characterization, monitoring, and remediation field assessments safely and according to work plans.
  2. Traveling via aircraft, motor vehicles, ATVs, and watercraft to perform fieldwork, site visits, or meetings.
  3. Performing field screening and sampling for contaminants and environmental parameters in various media following SOPs, guidance, and regulations.
  4. Overseeing installation and development of borings and monitoring/extraction wells using various drilling methods.
  5. Classifying soils using the USCS.
  6. Interpreting geophysical logs.
  7. Documenting field operations, including personnel, equipment, weather, and environmental data, using photography, handwritten notes, forms, and tablets. Communicating with project managers via phone, email, and reports.
  8. Inspecting work progress, equipment, and sites to verify safety and compliance with project specifications.
  9. Scheduling and supervising subcontractors.
  10. Adhering to project schedules and budgets as directed by project managers.
  11. Assisting or leading the preparation of proposals, planning documents, and reports.
  12. Performing other duties as assigned.

Level-Specific Responsibilities:

Level II: Provide client support, maintain technical expertise, lead teams, execute projects, assist with proposals, and mentor others. Spend 30-50% of time in the field, possibly in remote locations.

Level III: Similar to Level II but with greater responsibility, including managing smaller projects and maintaining two areas of expertise. Spend 20-40% of time in the field.

Senior Level: Lead projects, provide client support, oversee technical execution, prepare proposals, mentor staff, and manage projects involving site characterization and long-term monitoring. Spend 10-25% of time in the field.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geology or geological sciences
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean record
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and databases like Access
  • Ability to explain technical aspects clearly

Experience requirements vary by level, from 3-5 years for Level II, 5-7 years for Level III, and 8+ years for Senior, with substitutions possible for advanced degrees.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in programs like Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, GIS, environmental modeling
  • Environmental professional certifications (e.g., ADEC, HAZWOPER, CHMM)
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification
  • Experience with USACE, AFCEC, DoD/Federal projects
  • Regional experience in the eastern/southeastern US
  • Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures
