Job summary

Shannon & Wilson, an employee-owned geotechnical consulting firm headquartered in Seattle, is seeking an Entry-Level Geologist in the Jacksonville area. You will perform field explorations, collect samples, observe earthwork, and help prepare reports under supervision.

Ideal candidates hold a BS in Geology (MS preferred), 0–6 years of experience, and are willing to travel to support multiple offices. Strong writing and communication skills, plus proficiency in MS Word and Excel, are essential.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Geology; MS preferred.
  • 0–6 years of geology experience including soil sampling.
  • LG exam taken or planned.
  • Geologic interpretation from explorations and samples.
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering practice and earthwork observation.
  • Strong writing, organizational and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to support Shannon & Wilson offices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field explorations, collect samples, construction observation, geologic reconnaissance, mapping and field reports.
  • Experience with drilling techniques: mud rotary, hollow stem auger, down-hole bucket auger, rotary coring.
  • Organize laboratory data, conduct limited soil index testing, and report data.
  • Interact with subcontractors, clients, and staff at all levels.
  • Assist with business development and cost proposals.
  • Follow QA policies and Health & Safety policies and Loss Prevention procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

Requirements
  • BS degree in Geology or Engineering Geology; supported by a MS Degree in Geology or Engineering Geology is strongly preferred.
  • 0 to 6 years of experience as a Geologist, including soil sampling and some testing experience.
  • Have taken or are prepared to take LG exam.
  • Experience in geologic interpretation using soil and rock samples retrieved from explorations and soil classifications.
  • Experience with application to geotechnical engineering practice (rock mechanics experience a plus) and observation of earthwork, pile/shaft foundation and retaining structure construction a plus.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
  • The ability to work independently with the appropriate level of OR minimal supervision.
  • The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
  • A valid driver license and insurable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); MS Access (desirable).
  • Critical thinking and analysis.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 30+ pounds.
  • Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.
  • The ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.
  • The ability to swim preferred.
  • The ability to get a pass for access to military facilities.
Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, overall abilities, alignment with the needs of the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, an Entry-Level Geologist typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Professional I, II, III, or IV level.
