Qualifications

  • Master's degree in human genetics, genetic counseling, or related field.
  • Current Ohio license or supervised practice license as a genetic counselor; license due within 90 days.
  • Board-Certified or eligible to sit for the Genetic Counseling Board Examination.
  • BLS certification may be required depending on department.
  • Expertise in genetics principles, including cytogenetics and molecular genetics.
  • Strong interviewing and non-directive counseling skills.
  • Experience with psychosocial aspects and family risk communication.
  • Proficiency with EMR and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in obtaining patient histories and records for genetic testing and coordinates testing.
  • Discusses testing options, advantages, disadvantages, risks, and limitations with physicians.
  • Transmits information about genetic risks and provides follow-up support and counseling as needed.
  • Interprets results with physicians, discusses additional test options for patients and relatives.
  • Tracks and manages items for clinical and research purposes; summarizes literature for patient findings.
  • Provides in-service education to community providers and maintains educational materials.
