Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Genetic Counselor to provide comprehensive prenatal genetic counseling including preconception care. You will work with a wide range of indications and collaborate with obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, and laboratories.

The role offers teaching opportunities, supervision of students and residents, and potential involvement in clinical research within a large academic medical center. Hybrid work on the School of Medicine Campus is available.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a graduate program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
  • ABGC certification as a genetic counselor, OR must seek certification within two years of hire date.
  • Must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians within one year of employment, or eligible for a Supervised Genetic Counselor license with the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • Must maintain current certification and licensure during duration of employment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Responsibilities

  • Case preparation for the counseling session, including review of prior testing results and arranging testing with insurance authorization.
  • Coordinate testing procedures such as chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound, cfDNA screening, and carrier screening.
  • Communicate with maternal-fetal medicine physicians and laboratories as required.
  • Provide follow-up with patients and referring providers, document counseling and testing results, and facilitate additional consultations.
  • Operate with autonomy and conduct educational activities or research collaborations as opportunities arise.
  • Collaborate on clinical research and engage with the Johns Hopkins University community.
  • Participate in education through lectures for student groups, other medical providers, and lay groups.
  • Supervise genetic counseling graduate students and residents on rotations.

Education

Master’s Degree (ABGC accredited)
ABGC certification or within 2 years of hire
Maryland physician licensure within 1 year

Job description

We are seeking a Genetic Counselor whose primary job responsibilities include providing prenatal, inclusive of preconception, genetic counseling to patients referred for a wide variety of indications including maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, personal or family history health concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic/medication exposures, pre-implantation genetic testing, and infertility.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Case preparation for the counseling session may include review of previous pertinent testing results, research regarding the condition of concern, and arranging for appropriate testing, including facilitation of insurance authorization utilizing support staff.
  • The genetic counselor will coordinate testing, which may include chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound, cell-free DNA screening, and carrier screening.
  • A qualified candidate should have good case management skills. Communication with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, and various laboratories is required.
  • The genetic counselor will provide follow-up by contacting the patient and referring providers with test results, documentation of the counseling session and results of testing, and assisting with arrangements for additional consultations or testing. Cases are presented in weekly conferences for management and student education.
  • Critical thinking and an independent work ethos can be rewarded with considerable autonomy in this work setting.
  • Collaboration in clinical research is encouraged.
  • Opportunities exist for interaction with 25 additional counselors in other departments at this large, academic medical center, as well as faculty throughout Johns Hopkins University.
  • In addition to responsibilities related to direct patient care, the genetic counselors have opportunities for participation in education via the provision of lectures to various student groups, other medical providers, and lay groups.
  • Additional teaching responsibilities include supervision of genetic counseling graduate students, fellows/residents in maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics, and medical students and gynecology/obstetrics residents on elective rotations.
Minimum Qualifications

  • ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) certification as a genetic counselor, OR must seek certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within two years of hire date.
