Job summary

Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach seeks a Genetic Counselor to assess family histories and counsel patients on genetic disorders. You will discuss testing processes, obtain informed consent, and coordinate insurance coverage for genetic tests.

The role includes documenting findings, presenting educational programs, supporting research protocols, and training residents. A Master’s in Genetic Counseling and ABGC eligibility are required with 1–2 years of experience desired.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an AC**G C**C-accredited program (ACGC) required.
• Must be certified or eligible for ABGC certification.
• 1–2 years of genetic counseling experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and assess family and medical history; counsel patients and/or families in genetic disorders.
• Discuss genetic testing process, results, and benefits/limitations; obtain informed consent.
• Coordinate and research insurance coverage for genetic testing; prepare letters of medical necessity.
• Assist families in understanding disorders, recurrence risks, and management strategies.

• Develop and present educational programs and resources relevant to genetics.
• Support research protocol execution including subject recruitment and data handling.
• Perform administrative tasks and support training activities for residents and healthcare staff.

Job Description Summary:

Position Responsibilities

• Obtain and assess family and medical history and counsels patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects.
• Discusses genetic testing process, possible results and benefits and limitations of genetic testing options. Obtains informed consent from interested patients.
• Coordinates and researches all insurance coverage for genetic testing for patients. Researching the best tests based on patient’s insurance coverage. Prepares letters of medical necessity.
• Assists families in understanding genetic disorders in their families; probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks.
• Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient; documents cases and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
• Develops and presents educational and related programs, and available resources as appropriate.
• Coordinates and supports the execution of research protocol as needed; including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
• Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
• Teaches and supervises training activities of residents and/or other health care professionals. Scholarly activities are supported and encouraged.

Qualifications

License/Registration/Certification

• Must be certified or eligible for ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) certification.

Education

• Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) required.

Experience

• 1-2 years of genetic counseling experience preferred.
