We are looking for a Generator Service Technician who takes pride in quality workmanship, works well as part of a team, and understands that a customer's confidence in their generator depends on thorough diagnostics, correct repairs, and clear communication.

This is a hands-on field position focused specifically on generator service, maintenance, and repair.

Position Summary

The Generator Service Technician is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of residential and light commercial standby generator systems.

This position works independently in the field and alongside electricians, plumbers, and other Generators on Demand team members as needed to keep customer systems running safely and reliably. Work includes scheduled preventive maintenance, load bank testing, electrical and fuel system diagnostics, transfer switch troubleshooting, and emergency response when a customer loses power.

The ideal candidate is mechanically and electrically inclined, comfortable reading wiring diagrams and service literature, experienced with generator diagnostics and repair, and willing to perform the physical work required to service equipment in the field.

Our goal is to diagnose correctly and repair completely the first time, so our customers' systems start when they need them to.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on standby and portable generator systems, including oil, filter, spark plug, battery, and coolant service.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and fuel system faults on generator systems.
  • Troubleshoot control panels, controllers, transfer switches, and automatic transfer equipment.
  • Perform load bank testing and verify generator performance under load.
  • Test, adjust, and replace generator components, sensors, and accessories as required.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, service manuals, and manufacturer technical literature accurately.
  • Document parts used and recommend follow-up repairs based on field findings.
  • Support generator startup and commissioning as required.
  • Respond to emergency and after-hours service calls when customers lose power.

Job Preparation

  • Review the service work order, customer history, and prior field notes before arriving at the job site.
  • Understand the reported symptoms, equipment model, and service scope before arriving on site.
  • Identify potential obstacles or additional service needs before work begins.
  • Prepare the service vehicle with the tools, equipment, parts, and materials necessary to complete the scheduled service.
  • Confirm required parts, supplies, and service equipment are available before leaving for the job site.
  • Help identify jobs that may require additional time, parts, or manpower.

Preparation is critical. Our goal is to arrive ready to diagnose and repair efficiently and correctly the first time.

On-Site Service Coordination

  • Work closely with electricians, plumbers, subcontractors, and other Generators on Demand team members as needed.
  • Coordinate with customers to confirm access, scope, and expectations before beginning work.
  • Communicate immediately when unexpected conditions, missing parts, or equipment issues arise.
  • Help the team find practical solutions to field challenges.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area throughout the service visit.
  • Protect the customer's home, landscaping, driveway, and property while performing service work.
  • Represent Generators on Demand professionally when interacting with customers and subcontractors.

Work Orders & Documentation

  • Review assigned service work orders before beginning each job.
  • Update service work orders with accurate field notes regarding work completed, readings taken, and parts used.
  • Document any incomplete work, unexpected conditions, parts needed, or required return visits.
  • Provide clear information when additional service work is required so a return work order can be properly scheduled.
  • Follow company procedures for completing and closing service work orders.

Inspection & Performance Verification

  • Ensure the repair or service is complete and professionally finished.
  • Verify that the work area is clean and safe before leaving the site.
  • Confirm the generator starts, runs, and transfers correctly before the job is considered finished.
