Job description

Meta is seeking a Generator Engineer to become part of our Design Engineering and Construction Operations Engineering team. The Generator Program team manages a growing fleet approaching 4GW of standby power generation across our global footprint of data centers. Generator Engineers are involved in all aspects of generator life-cycle operations, from design and commissioning through long-term operation, essential to ensuring reliable standby power for our critical infrastructure. They provide direct support to our field teams for new construction, site specific projects and global level programmatic efforts. Operation includes PM program oversight, optimization initiatives, troubleshooting, root cause evaluations, OEM vendor engagement, and emerging programs such as HVO fuel transition and Behind-the-Meter (BTM) power generation. The establishment of new regions in the US, Europe, and Asia are important next steps in the evolution of Meta’s infrastructure expansion.

Generator Engineer, Data Center Infrastructure Responsibilities
  • Fleet Engineering & Reliability
  • Lead complex generator engineering projects including root cause analysis of system failures, development of corrective actions, and implementation of design enhancements across the global fleet
  • Evaluate system performance for load management and capacity planning
  • develop engineering metrics, health dashboards, and BMS-based reporting to optimize reliability and inform business-critical decisions
  • Review new and retrofit generator designs, commissioning plans, critical operational procedures, and as-built documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Serve as an engineering point of escalation for generator system issues across all data center sites
  • Program Management and Change Control
  • Manage change controls for the generator program spanning design, build, and operations phases
  • Develop and maintain specifications, RFPs, ROMs, SOWs, and master statements of work (MSOWs) in coordination with sourcing and procurement partners
  • Evaluate facility processes and industry best practices to drive continuous improvement in the program’s efficiency and effectiveness
  • Manage and expand the internal advanced generator training program
  • support new site SME onboarding and program administration (internal learning management and knowledge-sharing platforms)
  • Cross-Functional Coordination and Vendor Management
  • Lead cross-functional efforts spanning Design, Quality, Data Science, EHS, Capacity, and field operations teams
  • Coordinate fleet-wide equipment issue management and OEM vendor engagement (Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU) through recurring sync meetings
  • Conduct site visits (20–30% travel) for engineering studies, technical support, audits, startup testing, and commissioning
  • Routinely report and present findings, recommendations, and program status to peers, partners, and leadership
  • Emerging Programs
  • Provide engineering support for HVO fuel transition implementation across new and existing sites in partnership with Energy teams
  • Support Behind-the-Meter (BTM) operational activities, including PPA monitoring, fuel ordering logistics, and site training coordination
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, nuclear, or a related engineering field
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, operations, or technical program management within power generation or critical infrastructure environments
  • Technical knowledge of diesel engines, standby generation systems, and engine maintenance practices, with familiarity across major OEM platforms (Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU)
  • Experience managing vendor/OEM relationships and developing technical specifications or scopes of work
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex system issues independently and collaboratively
  • Experience communicating technical findings in writing and verbally to cross-functional partners and leadership
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering design, specification, and maintenance of standby power generation systems
  • Experience with HVO/alternative fuels or Behind-the-Meter/distributed generation operations
  • Experience in project management, project engineering, or operations management beyond field technician-level responsibilities
  • Track record of driving results through influence, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or a local equivalent
  • Deep technical knowledge across generator subsystems including alternators, controls, enclosures, fuel storage/polishing, and starting systems
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
