Job summary

The Laboratory at UPMC Williamsport is hiring a Medical Laboratory Scientist OR Medical Laboratory Technician for a Generalist position. This is a full time, 40 hours per week position.

Daylight shift schedule with hours falling between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with rotating weekend and holiday coverage. The department offers a robust Laboratory Career Ladder with MLS ($31.72/hr - $43.30/hr) and MLT ($26.14/hr - $35.38/hr); final title reflects education, experience, and manager discretion.

Qualifications

• MLT: Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate).
• BS in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical lab science with 6 months of clinical lab experience.
• Or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for high complexity testing.

Responsibilities

• Conduct, direct or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection and implementation.
• Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols; initiate corrective action.
• Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
• Operate and maintain equipment, perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance and calibration; monitor and maintain supply inventory.
• Train and orient new employees, students and residents as applicable.
• Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies; ensure proper collection and processing of specimens for analysis and timely reporting.
