Job summary

Hy-Vee in Michigan is seeking a General Merchandise Clerk to provide prompt, friendly customer service, rotate and replenish stock, and maintain attractive displays in the General Merchandise department.

You will assist customers, help them locate products, and ensure cleanliness and product quality across the store. The role includes operating registers when needed and working with the team to meet store standards.

Qualifications

• No education requirement; six months to a year of related work experience preferred.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
• Ability to follow instructions and guide people and provide basic direction.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service and treat customers as the most important people in the store.
• Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner and address them by name when possible.
• Assist customers by guiding them to products, securing items, loading heavy items, and passing along requests.
• Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to callers.
• Work with coworkers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in the department and store.
• Rotate, face, and replenish merchandise and ensure high quality standards are met.
• Assist with inventory as requested and maintain displays.
• Operate department registers and handle payments where applicable.
• Adhere to company policies and store guidelines.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
• Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store
• Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
• Assists customers by: escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience
• Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call
• Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
• Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
• Rotates, faces, and replenishes merchandise and ensures highest quality standards are met
• Anticipates product needs for the department on a daily basis
• Reviews department status for cleanliness, product quality and quantity
• Checks in product, puts product away, and may review invoices
• Runs the department registers and receives payment, makes change, etc., where applicable
• Assists with inventory as requested
• Maintains displays in the department and throughout the store
• Removes trash in a timely manner
• Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress
• Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
• Reports to work when scheduled and on time

Education and Experience

No education requirement. Over six months to a year of related work experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Charcteristics

• Possess excellent customer service skills
• Must have the ability to solve practical problems; interpret instructions
• Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
• Must have the ability to file, post, and mail materials; copy data from one record to another; interview to obtain basic information; guide people and provide basic direction

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions

Working Conditions

This position is frequently exposed to dirt. There is occasional exposure to equipment movement hazard and chemicals/solvents. This is a fast paced work environment with significant pressure.

Salary

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $15.00 to $18.75 depending on experience.
