Summary

The General Manager, Transportation supports the company’s goals for quality, profitability, customer service, and strategic growth by overseeing the daily processes, personnel, and performance of the Transportation Division.

This role executes department initiatives aligned with the organization’s strategic plan and has overall responsibility for Transportation Operations, Quality, Customer Service, Tracking & Tracing, Carrier Relations, Dispatch, Asset Fleet, Transportation Technology, Compliance, and strategic business initiatives.

The General Manager works closely with senior transportation leadership to establish annual division goals, including budgeting, performance management, profitability, customer retention, operational efficiency, and organizational development.

This position also implements and monitors policies for departments under its purview and supports employee development, succession planning, operational excellence, and continued growth.

Key Responsibilities
General Operational Performance
  • Champion and model the company’s mission, vision, and values while creating an environment in which associates understand and demonstrate alignment with company goals.
  • Develop, execute, and monitor department goals and objectives that support the organization’s strategic plan, including growth, profitability, customer service, and operational excellence.
  • Identify trends, anticipate business needs, and recommend solutions that improve service, strengthen customer relationships, and support long‑term transportation strategy.
  • Ensure projects and process improvements are aligned with defined time, cost, and scope expectations and deliver measurable impact on performance and efficiency.
  • Work cross‑functionally with Sales, Customer Service, Quality, Operations, Finance, and Technology teams to support new client onboarding, service execution, and operational communication.
  • Lead change‑management activities related to new systems, processes, customer requirements, and strategic initiatives across the Transportation Division.
  • Improve quality, workflows, asset utilization, associate efficiency, and waste reduction through process review, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Participate in the training, testing, and implementation of new systems or tools that support Transportation, including promoting associate engagement and adoption.
  • Partner with senior transportation leadership to support culture planning, talent development, succession readiness, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Direct overall division performance to meet financial, operational, customer satisfaction, regulatory, and company standards.
Customer and Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Support the sales team with Requests for Proposal (RFPs), customer presentations, solution development, and onboarding processes for new customers.
  • Assist the sales team in developing a greater understanding of the processes and capabilities of the Transportation Division.
  • Provide feedback to executive leadership regarding industry trends, customer challenges, growth opportunities, and service enhancements.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Quality, Warehousing, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Sales to achieve business objectives.
  • Lead executive‑level customer business reviews and strategic account discussions as needed.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers, carriers, and strategic business partners.
People Leadership and Management
  • Provide leadership to the Transportation Division in all areas, including industry knowledge, operational excellence, customer service, profitability, and professionalism.
  • Manage and enhance customer and carrier relationship opportunities to support growth.
  • Build bench strength by participating in recruiting and interviewing activities to identify individuals who will positively impact the organization.
  • Identify employees with the potential to assume additional responsibilities or move into leadership positions.
  • Hold managers and employees accountable for meeting goals and assignments and take appropriate action when performance issues arise.
  • Direct and develop leadership staff through coaching, mentoring, performance planning, and professional development.
  • Establish annual goals, objectives, and performance expectations for direct reports.
  • Create succession‑planning strategies that support organizational stability and future leadership development.

Requirements
  • Extensive understanding of the logistics and transportation industry, including regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to gather and analyze data, interpret information, and draw sound conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret financial statements.
  • Ability to analyze financial information, recognize trends, and make strategic business decisions.

  • Ability to manage an overall division, including strategic planning, budgeting, scheduling, prioritization, and execution.
  • Strong supervisory skills, including recruiting, coaching, mentoring, developing, and managing employee performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead departments through subordinate managers while creating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with ownership, senior management, direct reports, customers, carriers, and employees throughout the organization.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and communicating issues involving projects, processes, customer relationships, and operational performance.
  • Ability to negotiate with and influence customers, carriers, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web‑based applications.
  • Advanced understanding of Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and transportation technology platforms.
  • Strong understanding of LTL, Truckload, Expedited, Air Freight, and International Transportation operations.
  • Experience managing carrier relationships, transportation procurement, network optimization, and customer implementations.
  • Experience supporting and responding to Requests for Proposal (RFPs).
  • Prior knowledge and understanding of Life Science and temperature‑controlled transportation preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of service and operational performance.
Experience and Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain, Transportation, or a related field preferred.
  • 10–15 years of experience in the transportation and logistics industry.
  • 7–10 years of management experience in a comparable organization.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple departments through managers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, profitability, strategic initiatives, and organizational growth.
  • Strong knowledge of Transportation Management Systems and transportation operations technology.
