Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of general maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Forklift operator’s license.
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico or Texas driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist tradesmen with maintenance and repairs to campus buildings, facilities and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install Access Control system components and security cameras.
  • Perform minor electrical work: replace bulbs/outlets, ballast, and related wiring.
  • Perform minor plumbing and HVAC repairs and maintenance.
  • Assist in carpentry tasks: painting, furniture finishing, doors/windows, drywall and partitions.
  • Maintain tools, inspect and repair equipment for safe operation.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on tools, machinery, and facilities as needed.
  • May serve on campus committees and perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORKER
REPORTS TO: ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR OPERATIONS & SPECIAL PROJECTS
SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in preventive and general maintenance, repair, and alteration of buildings, facilities, fixtures, systems, and equipment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists tradesmen in making necessary maintenance and repairs to campus buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  • Trouble shoot, repair and install Access Control system components and or security cameras.
  • Electrical and associated work - assists in troubleshooting and performing minor electrical equipment assembly and repairs such as replacing light bulbs and ballast, hanging Christmas lights, repairing or installing electrical outlets, installing or repairing circuits, CATV equipment, and wiring.
  • Mechanical/Plumbing and associated work – assists in troubleshooting and performing minor plumbing and HVAC repairs such as replacing pump seals, belts, filters, and couplers in bearing assemblies; clearing sewer lines; and repair or installation of toilets, sinks, faucets, fountains, and other fixtures.
  • Carpentry and associated work—assists in performing a variety of carpentry-related repair and maintenance, such as painting and furniture finishing/refinishing, general construction/carpentry work, including hanging drywall, building partitions and frames, installing doors and windows, and forming and pouring cement.
  • Additional duties may be required of certain positions, such as performing locksmith duties, maintaining and/or developing campus drawings (CAD), including changes to existing facilities; moving furniture and equipment; assembling prefabricated furniture; moving and setting up classrooms and meeting rooms for special events/other; performs minor welding in the maintenance and repair of equipment/fixtures/other; maintains central plant, mechanical rooms, tunnels and keeps them clean and in an orderly manner.
  • Maintains various hand and power tools to ensure their safe and efficient operation by inspecting the equipment daily and weekly; by replacing worn parts; by sharpening blades and edges of hand and power tools; by repairing or arranging for the repair of damaged or broken equipment.
  • Inspects and performs preventative maintenance on tools, machinery, and facilities as needed.
  • May serve on various campus committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in general maintenance work OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Forklift operator’s license.
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico or Texas driver’s license
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and HVACR systems and repairs.
  • Knowledge of control access system and components, security camera and systems
  • Knowledge of general construction, carpentry, and welding practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of painting practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of preventive and general maintenance.
  • Knowledge of power and hand tools and heavy equipment operations.
  • Skill in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining HVACR, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Skill in painting, staining, and varnishing buildings and furniture.
  • Skill in operating power and hand tools and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in reading blueprints and schematics.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain and repair hand and power tools sufficient to ensure their availability and safe operation for projects.
  • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
  • Positions may require the ability to safely move up to 50 pounds, work on heights of 6 feet, and drive a forklift, man lift, trencher, truck, or other related equipment.
