Job description

Facility Operations – IUB

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) ensures IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable, supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the university. Facility Operations, a unit of CPF, maintains the physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington, providing wide‑range services to create a well‑functioning campus.

Responsibilities
  • Perform semi‑skilled maintenance and repair on HVAC systems, check air vents, and install window air conditioning units.
  • Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical and electronic components, machinery, equipment, and appliances.
  • Repair and perform minor maintenance on pipe systems and plumbing fixtures, including faucet leak repair, vandal‑proof stoppers, and shower head replacement. Clear drains using plunger and spring.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems, determine corrective steps, and consult blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to keep machines running smoothly, building systems operating efficiently, and prevent building deterioration. Repair or replace defective equipment parts with hand and power tools and reassemble equipment.
  • Repair and replace drywall, paint, screens, glass, doors and hardware, shade blinds, furniture, lamps, handrails, ceilings, floor tiles, baseboard molding strips, and more. Replace light switches, ceiling lights, and fluorescent fixtures.
  • Maintain parts, supplies, and equipment; advise supervisor when supplies need ordering. Use ranging tools from simple hand and power tools to precision measuring instruments and electrical testing devices.
  • Assist in directing the work of others.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance. Drive university vehicles as needed. Work any shift as required. Provide 24‑hour emergency response. Assist with snow removal activities as necessary.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Experience
  • 2 years of multi‑craft maintenance experience in facilities upkeep.

Other Requirements

This role requires the ability to remain stationary or move about the workplace for long durations, effective communication, operation of machinery, tools, and controls, to ascend/descend ladders and stairs, work in low‑level positions, detect chemicals and gases, ascend to rooftops, and move in tight spaces for inspections. The person must perform essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Available to work during inclement weather (snow and ice) when weather emergencies require campus support. Must be available for daytime training during the first six months of employment. Must be available for shifts 3:30 p.m.–12:00 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Monday.

Location: Bloomington, Indiana.
