Job summary

Vertical Mechanical Group is seeking a General Laborer – Construction to support our field teams on active commercial job sites across the DMV area. This hands-on role involves material handling, site preparation, clean-up, and assisting skilled HVAC and plumbing tradespeople in a fast-paced, indoor/outdoor environment.

You must be able to lift heavy loads, work safely with PPE, follow directions, and collaborate with a construction crew.

Qualifications

• Physically demanding construction work throughout the workday.
• Ability to lift and carry more than 50 pounds and up to 75 pounds as required.
• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors on active construction sites.

Responsibilities

• Perform general labor duties on active commercial construction sites, including site preparation, clean‑up, debris removal, and material handling.
• Load, unload, carry, move, and distribute construction materials, tools, and equipment throughout the job site.
• Regularly perform lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and hanging of materials and equipment as required by the project.
• Independently lift and carry materials weighing more than 50 pounds, with the ability to lift up to 75 pounds when required.
• Assist skilled tradespeople, including sheet metal installers, refrigerant piping mechanics, plumbers, and other field personnel.
• Help position, hold, lift, and hang materials during installation as directed by skilled tradespeople or supervisors.
• Assist with setting up and taking down scaffolding, temporary structures, barriers, and other job‑site materials as needed.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and wear required PPE at all times.

The Opportunity

As a General Laborer at VMG, you will provide hands‑on support to our construction teams across active commercial job sites throughout the DMV area. This is a physically demanding, field‑based position that involves material handling, lifting, carrying, site preparation, clean‑up, and assisting our skilled HVAC and Plumbing tradespeople.

This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a variety of construction environments and weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures.

What You’ll Do

• Perform general labor duties on active commercial construction sites, including site preparation, clean‑up, debris removal, and material handling.

• Assist with setting up and taking down scaffolding, temporary structures, barriers, and other job‑site materials as needed.
• Participate in demolition activities and job‑site clean‑up.
• Operate basic hand tools and construction equipment under appropriate supervision.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
• Follow all VMG and job‑site safety requirements and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support project needs and successful completion of work.

What We’re Looking For

• Ability to perform physically demanding construction work throughout the workday.
• Ability to regularly lift and carry more than 50 pounds and independently lift up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to perform repetitive lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and hanging/positioning materials.
• Ability to work on active construction sites throughout the DMV area.
• Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and climate conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Comfortable working around construction equipment, tools, elevated work areas, uneven surfaces, dust, noise, and other typical construction‑site conditions.
• Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a construction team.
• Strong commitment to workplace and job‑site safety.
• Dependable attendance and punctuality.
• Willingness to assist multiple trades and perform various labor‑related duties based on project needs.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This is a physically demanding field position performed on active construction sites. Employees must be able to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, reach, climb, kneel, stoop, lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment.

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors and may expose employees to hot, cold, wet, humid, windy, or other changing weather and climate conditions. Construction sites may also include exposure to dust, dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and active construction equipment.

Employees must be physically capable of safely performing the essential functions of the position, including lifting and carrying more than 50 pounds and performing repetitive material handling and overhead/hanging work.
