Qualifications

GENERAL LABORER

FACILITIES OPERATIONS

Position Summary

The University of St. Thomas is seeking a reliable and hardworking General Laborer to support daily facilities operations across campus. This role is responsible for setting up and breaking down spaces for university events, moving furniture and equipment, and providing general assistance to skilled trades staff (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, etc.). The ideal candidate is a team player who can perform physically demanding work safely and efficiently while representing the university in a professional manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Set up and tear down tables, chairs, staging, and equipment for university events, meetings, conferences, and ceremonies
• Move furniture, equipment, and materials within and between campus buildings
• Provide general labor support to tradespeople during maintenance, repair, and construction projects
• Load and unload delivery trucks and transport materials using hand trucks, dollies, or other equipment
• Assist with minor building maintenance tasks as directed
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of work and storage areas
• Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely
• Follow all safety protocols, including proper lifting techniques and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Respond to event and operational needs during evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as scheduled
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 75+ lbs with assistance
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow instructions
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in general labor, facilities, event setup, or a similar role (preferably in higher education)
• Basic familiarity with hand and power tools
• Prior experience assisting skilled trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.)
• Valid driver's license

Work Environment

This position involves both indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions, and requires physical exertion including lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy items. Work may occur on ladders, scaffolding, or in confined spaces as needed.
