Job summary

Rumpke Waste & Recycling is seeking a General Laborer to support facility grounds maintenance and routine upkeep. You will operate various hand-held tools, assist with waste cart organization, and help with routes as needed, while following safety standards and company policies.

The position emphasizes reliability, ability to work outside in varying conditions, and good communication with customers and colleagues. Evening and weekend work may be required, with potential for overtime.

Qualifications

• Mechanical aptitude and basic tool handling are preferred.
• Good written and verbal communication with customers and coworkers.
• Must read and speak English well enough to understand directions and safety training.

Responsibilities

• Maintain facility grounds and perform routine upkeep.
• Operate hand-held and powered tools safely and efficiently.
• Ensure equipment and tools are in safe operating condition per policy and OSHA.
• Assist with organizing waste carts and bins and support on route as needed.
• Perform light maintenance, cleaning, painting, and small repairs as required.
• Interact professionally with internal and external customers.

General Laborers are responsible for general upkeep and maintenance of the facilities and facility grounds. General Laborers may also perform custodial duties in the offices, maintenance shops, etc. This position may also assist in various lines of business.

Responsibilities of Position:

• Maintain facility grounds-keeping including but not limited to mowing, trimming, picking up paper/trash from facility grounds and surrounding areas
• Operate various hand-held manual, electrical and gas-powered tools, and equipment
• Maintain and ensure the safe operating condition of assigned equipment and tools according to Company policy and OSHA
• Assist with the organization and distribution of waste carts and bins
• Perform safe driving practices while transporting, loading, and unloading containers and bins
• Act as a helper on route as needed
• Assist with general housekeeping of maintenance shops and offices
• Perform minor repairs and general upkeep of facilities
• Clean, prepare, and paint containers
• Build, repair, and install erosion control such as silt fence and straw bales
• Professionally interact with internal and external customers
• Pressure-wash and perform minor repairs to waste carts, bins, containers, and portable rest rooms and prepare for delivery as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

• This position will not manage employees

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

• Mechanical aptitude preferred
• Self-starter, strong work ethic and ability to work with minimal supervision
• Good written and verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
• Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:

• Experience working with various hand tools and equipment preferred

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:

• Continuously lifting/carrying a max of 10 lbs
• Frequently pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
• Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 35 lbs
• Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
• Continuously working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
• Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
• Occasionally stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
• Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
• Rarely sitting
• Continuously standing
• Frequently walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:

• Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
• Exposure to residential and commercial waste
• Ability to travel between offices, as required
• Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
• Legally eligible to work in the United States
• Valid driver's license (if applicable)
• Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
• Must be able to read and speak the English language
