Classification Specification
Classification Title: Gas System Equipment Operator
Purpose of Classification
The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform semi-skilled/manual work functions associated with the gas department.
Essential Functions
- Provides direction, guidance, and assistance to employees; assigns and evaluates work; provides training as needed.
- Operates equipment and performs semi-skilled and manual work activities involving various gas department functions; may be assigned to gas pipeline installation/maintenance, or other projects.
- Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in department projects and activities, including a utility truck, backhoe, end loader, salt spreader, snow plow, trencher, tapping machine, boring equipment, directional drill, potholer, tractor, mower, weed eater, bush hog, chipper, leaf vacuum, water pump, air wrench, jack hammer, pipe wrench, pipe cutter, pipe threader, band saw, chain saw, welder, cutting torch, fire hose, fire hydrant, shovel, rake, broom, mechanical tools, etc.
- Transports, loads, and unloads refuse, equipment, and other materials.
- Performs tasks related to gas distribution and pipeline installation/maintenance, such as repairing/replacing gas lines, installing pipes, cutting/threading pipes, fusing gas lines, servicing gas lock valves, testing pressure levels, hot taping welded joints/taps/stoppers, building/painting gas meters/risers, building/painting regulator stations, servicing engines and compressors, boring under roads, welding, etc.
- Performs manual labor functions like breaking concrete, mowing, edging, landscaping, digging trenches, shoveling, lifting/moving heavy materials, debris removal, traffic control, etc.
- Maintains machinery, equipment, and tools; inspects, checks fluids, greases, cleans, and reports faulty equipment.
- Uses safety equipment and monitors work environment for safety.
- Prepares forms, reports, logs, and other documents.
- Reviews work orders, maps, manuals, and other documentation.
- Controls traffic with signage.
- In the absence of a Crew Leader, the Gas System Equipment Operator manages the crew.
- Communicates with supervisors, employees, city departments, the public, and others to coordinate work.
- Uses telephone and two-way radio for communication; relays messages and provides assistance.
- Maintains regular attendance during city business hours.
- Must pass drug and alcohol tests as per city policy.
Additional Functions
- Provides backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- May perform tasks in accordance with Operator Qualification (OQ) Program.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; vocational/technical training in equipment operation; 12 months experience in equipment operation or maintenance; or equivalent education, training, and experience. Must qualify for Operator Qualification (OQ) certification and maintain appropriate certification in National Fuel Gas Codes. Valid CDL with endorsements required, with permits obtained within 3 months and license within 12 months of hire.
