Job summary

Eversource Energy in Springfield, MA is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for gas distribution design and project execution. You will plan, design, and coordinate installation and maintenance of regulator stations, telemetry, and distribution mains.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, 3+ years of relevant experience, familiarity with AutoCAD and MS Office, and a valid driver’s license. Travel to MA/CT/NH may be required, and emergency restoration duties are possible.

Responsibilities

• Design systems or installations to fit objectives, conforming to industry standards, guidelines and regulations of federal, state and local authorities.
• Plan, schedule and perform engineering assignments related to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of gas distribution systems.
• Prepare documents for procurement, permitting and construction; specify materials and equipment.
• Develop and maintain field procedures to ensure compliance with company standards and codes.
• Coordinate construction activities with customers, contractors, States, Municipalities and internal departments.
• Assist in overseeing construction to ensure specification and code compliance; coordinate with Gas Control.
• Review purchase requisitions, and invoices related to departmental activity.
• Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
• Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
• Maintain accurate records and files.
• Support the company's goals and represent the company positively.
• Assist in gas distribution system restoration during emergencies.

Job description

Participates in the planning, development, scheduling, and the performance of engineering assignments related to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of gas distribution, pressure regulating systems, including standard projects. Applies engineering practices as directed by other team members.

Essential Functions:

• Under direction, designs systems or installations to fit objectives, conforming to industry standards, guidelines and regulations of federal, state and local authorities

• Gas systems include, but are not limited to, regulator stations, telemetry, commercial worker/monitor regulator sets, uprates, distribution main projects and culvert crossings.

• Performs site layouts and prepare necessary documents for procurement, permitting and construction. Specifies and procure materials and equipment

• Develops and maintains field procedures to ensure compliance with company standards and procedures, federal, state and local regulations and codes

• Coordinates construction activities with customers, contractors, States, Municipalities and internal departments

• Assists in the oversite of construction activities to insure specification and code compliance. Ensure compliance with field procedures and the coordination with Gas Control

• Reviews purchase requisitions, and invoices related to departmental activity.

• Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

• Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

• Maintains accurate records and files.

• Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

• Assists in gas distribution system restoration efforts during emergencies.

Qualifications:

• Thorough knowledge of distribution construction and maintenance work practices and procedures.

• Knowledge of applicable governmental code and regulations.

• Knowledge of welding and fusing principles.

• Working knowledge of environmental requirements affecting related activities.

• Familiarity with MS Office and AutoCAD.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.

Experience:

• Three (3) or more years related experience is required.

• Engineering design experience preferred.

• Gas experience is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

• Valid motor vehicle operator license is required.

Working Conditions:

• Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.

• Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.

• Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs are involved.

• Field observations will be a required part of this role.

• Job can require traveling to operating districts, gas facilities and companies within and outside the state.

• Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car.
