Job summary

The Dawes Arboretum in Newark, OH is seeking a full-time Gardener to join our Landscape & Conservation team, maintaining approximately 29 acres with routine maintenance and gardening tasks.

Reporting to the Horticulture Manager, the Gardener will perform planting, weeding, mulching, soil prep, and seasonal display care, while operating diverse landscape equipment and supporting events and volunteers; some evenings and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to obtain Ohio Pesticide Applicator License.
• Ohio Green Industry Association certification.
• CPR/First Aid certification.
• Attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
• Evening and weekend hours availability.
• Valid driver’s license and insurability.
• Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Responsibilities

• Perform general and routine landscape maintenance and gardening tasks including planting, raking, mulching, weeding, soil preparation, watering, plant removal and caging.
• Provide seasonal display care and maintenance.
• Operate landscape equipment and hand tools such as edgers, shovels, rakes, digging forks, hand shears, weed eaters, tractors, golf carts, gators and trucks.
• Remove leaves, debris and litter from Arboretum grounds.
• Perform invasive plant removal.
• Respond to inclement weather and/or emergency conditions and assist with snow, ice and storm debris.
• Comply with safety policies and procedures.
• Assist in event preparation, including set up, tear down and staffing.
• Assist with volunteer events.

We are currently recruiting a Gardener to join our Landscape & Conservation branch.

Reporting to the Horticulture Manager, the Gardener is responsible for the performance of routine landscape maintenance and gardening tasks within the central grounds of The Arboretum (approximately 29 acres).

This is an essential position which may require work during emergencies and/or outside normal work hours. The Gardener role is a full-time, year-round position.

Responsibilities

• Perform general and routine landscape maintenance and gardening tasks including planting, raking, mulching, weeding, soil preparation, watering, plant removal and caging.
• Provide seasonal display care and maintenance.
• Operate a variety of standard landscape equipment and hand tools, such as edgers, shovels, rakes, digging forks, hand shears, weed eaters, tractors, golf carts, gators and trucks.
• Remove leaves, debris and litter from Arboretum grounds.
• Perform invasive plant removal.
• Respond to inclement weather and/or emergency conditions (Emergency Response Team). Assist with snow, ice and storm debris; address garden hazards.
• Comply with all safety policies and procedures.
• Assist in event preparation, including set up, tear down and staffing.
• Assist with volunteer events.

Qualifications

High School diploma or General Education degree (GED); or an equivalent combination of education, training, and education.

• Ability to obtain and maintain Ohio Pesticide Applicator License, Ohio Green Industry Association certification, and CPR/First Aid certification.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal).
• Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
• Availability to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
• Valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Pay Range

Hourly rate of pay: $18.00 - $19.00.
