Job summary

Stew Leonard's Garden Shop is seeking a Garden Shop Assistant for the seasonal outdoor department in Paramus, NJ. The role emphasizes friendly, knowledgeable customer service, plant and tool guidance, and merchandising the garden displays.

You will greet customers, offer plant care advice, and help stock products while adhering to safety and quality standards. The position is outdoors with varying weather and physical activity requirements.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of plants is a plus but not required.
• Safely operate a forklift and all other equipment used in the day-to-day operation of the garden shop.
• Demonstrate safe usage of box cutters, skid sheers, and other hand tools.
• Demonstrate a vast knowledge of plants & garden equipment.
• Great customer service skills.
• Good communication skills, both written and oral.
• Good organizational skills.
• The ability to multi-task.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and assist them with inquiries and purchases.
• Provide advice on plants, gardening tools, and landscaping materials.
• Maintain a clean and organized environment.
• Unpack and stock merchandise on shelves and displays.
• Learn seasonality of garden shop products (Spring, Fall, Christmas).
• Ensure displays are full with proper signage.
• Interact with customers and handle inquiries and complaints effectively.
• Collaborate on other projects as needed.

Job description

Garden Shop Assistant

Seasonal Hourly – Estimated pay range $17-$17.50 depending on qualifications and experience

Must be at least 18 years and older

Position Description:

The Garden Shop Assistant will have a passion for plants and gardening, excellent customer service skills, and a strong work ethic.

Your day-to-day:

• Greet customers and assist them with their inquiries and purchases
• Provide advice on plants, gardening tools, and landscaping materials
• Maintain a clean and organized environment
• Unpack and stock merchandise on shelves and displays
• Willing to learn the seasonality of Garden Shop products, including Spring, Fall, and Christmas products.
• Ensure displays are full and merchandised, with appropriate signage
• Provides quality customer service, including interacting with customers, answering customer inquiries, and effectively handling customer complaints
• Other projects, as needed

Working Conditions:

• The garden shop is a seasonal outdoor department and exposure to weather is possible, such as extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, etc.
• The position requires frequent walking, standing, and lifting with a maximum of 100lbs and occasional climbing, pulling, pushing, and reaching
