Job summary

Rule 14.21 Mississippi Assistant Teacher Requirements

Requirements for Assistant Teachers Working in Pre-Kindergarten
  • Associate degree OR 60 College Credit Hours AND 12 early childhood college credit hours
  • Completion of an early childhood training program
  • High School Diploma/GED AND Verification of WorkKeys® Scores AND 12 early childhood college credit hours
  • Completion of an early childhood training program

*These hours can be included in the associate degree or 60 College Credit Hours.

**Completion of an early childhood training program includes the Child Development Associate (CDA), National/State Director's Credential, Montessori Credential, and the MDE's intensive specialized early childhood training program.

*** Prior to 2017, Teacher Assistants would have met WorkKeys® requirements: (1) a Reading for Information score of 4, an Applied Mathematics score of 4, and a Writing or Business Writing score of 3; OR After 2017, teacher assistants need to meet the WorkKeys® Silver Level certification.

Requirements for Assistant Teachers Working in Kindergarten and Up
  • Hold an associate degree or higher
  • Two Years or 48 College Credit Hours (Transcript verification required)
  • High School Diploma/GED AND Verification of WorkKeys® Scores

*** Prior to 2017, teacher assistants would have met WorkKeys® requirements: (1) a Reading for Information score of 4, an Applied Mathematics score of 4, and a Writing or Business Writing score of 3; OR After 2017, teacher assistants need to meet the WorkKeys® Silver Level certification. They must have received at least a four (4) on Applied Math, Workplace Documents and Business Writing.

Job Purpose

To help increase student achievement by assisting certified professional staff with students to meet instructional goals and objectives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
  • Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of 48 college hours from accredited college or university OR successful completion of Work-keys exam

Reports To: Assigned Classroom Teacher / Building Principal

Supervises: N/A

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  • Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Assists students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, and other related non-instructional areas.
  • Accompanies students on field trips for the purpose of assisting with supervision.
  • Copies and distribute and use educational materials as needed.
  • Assist students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement of IEP objectives, etc.
  • Assist students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • Assist guidance, student services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform other job related tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor or superintendent.
  • Limited travel to and from meetings may be required.
