Job summary

Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists San Antonio is seeking an Experienced Veterinary Assistant with a strong focus on surgery and anesthesia monitoring. You will play a pivotal role in safe anesthesia management, surgical prep, and postoperative care in a fast-paced specialty hospital setting.

Qualified candidates have at least 2 years of surgical experience, proficiency in sterile techniques, and advanced anesthesia skills.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of surgical experience as a veterinary assistant or unlicensed veterinary technician.
• Proficiency in surgical preparation and sterile technique with understanding of instruments and procedures.
• Advanced anesthesia and analgesia experience with ASA I-III patients including positive-pressure ventilation, capnography, and invasive blood pressure monitoring.
• Ability to obtain BP readings, interpret ECG/SpO2/ETCO2 findings, and recognize changes to support early intervention.
• Calm under pressure and able to assist during surgical or anesthetic emergencies.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Induce, monitor, and recover anesthesia following sterile protocols.
• Maintain sterile technique and support surgical prep, positioning, instruments, and post-op recovery.
• Assist surgeries and procedures in line with state Veterinary Practice Act.
• Support veterinarians to ensure quality care and client education.
• Communicate with clients about health concerns and treatment options; discuss financial options.
• Maintain comprehensive medical records with practice systems support.
• Obtain health history from clients and manage medical charts.
• Use safe restraining techniques and keep treatment areas clean and organized.
• Mentor and support fellow team members.
