Job summary

St. Joseph School District is seeking a Substitute/ Non Certified Substitute Teacher to support our schools by stepping in for regular classroom teachers as needed.

The ideal candidate holds a Missouri substitute or teaching certificate issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, with several pathways available to obtain the certificate. This role is 9 months (174 days) and reports to the building principal.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a substitute or teaching certificate issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Employees may obtain Substitute Certificate via several paths listed.

Responsibilities

  • Attend work regularly and punctually.
  • Telework when requested by the District with supervisor approval.
  • Report to building principal or secretary on arrival.
  • Review plans and schedules with leadership for the day.
  • Maintain routines and procedures of the school and classroom.
  • Teach the lesson as planned by the classroom teacher.
  • Consult with leadership before initiating any unlisted procedures.
  • Oversee pupil behavior during class, lunch, and recess.
  • Document daily activities in writing at day end.
  • Adhere to policies and practices of regular teachers.

Individuals will be required to have one of the following to obtain a Substitute Certificate:
  • High School Diploma, or high school transcripts, or proof of GED
  • Associates Degree or higher (need official transcripts for file)
  • 36 college credit hours (need official transcripts for file)
  • Completed Missouri's 20-hour online substitute training program

Purpose:

To enable each child to pursue their education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Attend work in a regular, reliable and punctual manner.
  • To "telework" when requested by the District.
  • Reports to the building principal or school secretary upon arrival at the school building.
  • Review with the principal, department head, team leader, or building secretary all plans, and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
  • Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
  • Teaches the lesson as planned by the classroom teacher.
  • Consults as appropriate with the building principal, department head, or team leader before initiating any teaching or other procedures not specified by the absent classroom teacher.
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in the class and during lunch and recess periods.
  • Reports in writing on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day.
  • Follows all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
  • Other duties assigned.
