Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years as Pharmacy Technician with 6 months non-sterile, 1 year nonhazardous sterile, and 6 months hazardous sterile experience.
  • Associate/Bachelor’s in Healthcare and CSPT certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Hazardous and non-Hazardous Sterile Compounding under supervision per SOPs/USP guidelines.

Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician Hazardous Sterile Compounding is responsible for assisting Pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non-sterile drug products.

Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares sterile preparations (CSPs) including both hazardous and non-hazardous sterile preparations and non-sterile drug products in order to ensure medications are ready and available for administration to the patient.

Maintains accurate records utilizing established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Hazardous and non-Hazardous Sterile Compounding; Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares hazardous and non-Hazardous sterile drug products.
  • Prepares of all types of pharmaceuticals : hazardous and non-hazardous, controlled and non-controlled, with regards to sterile preparations
  • Maintain accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
  • Follows established procedures for appropriate documentation in electronic health record or similar.
  • Maintain clean and safe environment for drug manipulation
  • Assist Pharmacist in filling patient specific medication orders and prescriptions by pulling items and ensuring medication is ready for delivery
  • Accurately document work performed throughout the compounding and/or medication delivery process in various electronic and automated systems including but not limited to: EPIC, DoseEdge, Omnicell.
  • Distributes compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non-sterile drug products as specified by the Pharmacist to designated areas on the patient floors.
  • Maintain and store inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies within the pharmacy or other assigned areas under proper storage conditions and/or security.
  • Receives and scans incoming medication orders from Wholesalers and Supply Chain.Appropriately and handles paperwork for each order.
  • Rotate stock within storage areas to promote the use of first expiring medications to prevent drug shortages and mitigate potential for patient harm
  • Discard expired drugs in accordance with established department procedures
  • Accurately document pertinent information regarding medications throughout day-to-day operations including but not limited to physical count, expiration dating, and beyond use dating if applicable
  • Keep accurate inventory and communicate with Pharmacy purchasing team
  • Assist with routine quality assurance activities in clean room including but not limited to temperature and pressure monitoring
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in the clean room, to include restocking of medications, diluents, and supplies
  • Clean ISO classified and/or non-classified spaces according to department procedure and USP standards.
  • When working in the main pharmacy, assists customers by answering incoming calls and greeting customers at the Pharmacy window.
  • Retrieves orders for pickup.
  • Non-Sterile Compounding; Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares non-sterile drug products.
  • Prepares of all types of pharmaceuticals : hazardous and non-hazardous, controlled and non-controlled, with regards to non-sterile preparations only
  • Maintain accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines
  • Maintain clean and safe environment for drug manipulation
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or a higher level of education that would require the completion of high school.
  • At least 2 years’ experience as a Pharmacy Technician required to include 6 months experience in non-sterile compounding, 1 year experience in nonhazardous sterile compounding, and 6 months experience in hazardous sterile compounding.

Or

  • 1 year experience as a Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician with Connecticut Children’s with successful completion of training in hazardous sterile compounding.
Education and/or Experience Preferred:
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare related field.
License and/or Certification Required:
  • State of Connecticut Pharmacy Technician license
  • PTCB
License and/or Certification Preferred:
  • Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician Certification (CSPT).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of governing policies (USP <795>, <797>, and <800>) of sterile and non-sterile drug preparation
  • Proficient understanding of Environmental Monitoring Procedures
  • Solid understanding of technician responsibilities in electronic health record (EPIC)
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of various electronic and automated systems to accurately document work performed throughout the compounding process and/or the medication delivery process.
  • Demonstrated ability to use mathematical methods and functions required for pharmaceutical preparation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office suite specifically MS word and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with patients and patient support members.
  • Able to prioritize work and adapt to new workflows and processes.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
