Job summary

Carle Health is seeking an RN First Assistant (RNFA) to support surgeons in perioperative care at our Illinois facilities. The role involves independent nursing responsibilities in perioperative assessment and post-operative evaluation, with collaboration across the OR team to ensure readiness of trays and supplies for each procedure.

The ideal candidate holds an IL RN license with CNOR certification and has 2+ years of perioperative nursing experience; BLS is required.

Qualifications

• Active RN license in Illinois (IDFPR) and BLS.
• CNOR certification.
• Completion of an accredited RNFA program.

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeon in general and specialized surgeries; ensure trays, instrumentation, and supplies are ready.
• Provide patient care and support.
• Perform surgical tasks: bleeding control, suturing, draping, exposure, tissue handling.
• Educate patient and family on operation and aftercare; communicate patient health.
• Monitor patient post-operatively for pain and complications.
• Review patient history and health assessments.
• Monitor surgical site for healing or infection.
• Possess ability to scrub and circulate as needed.
• Coordinate supplies and equipment to maintain efficient department; manage charges.

Job description

The RN First Assist will carry out the functions to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The RNFA practices perioperative nursing and is therefore responsible for independent nursing behaviors of perioperative assessment and post-operative evaluation of care. The intra-operative practice of the RNFA is inter-department with the surgeon. The RNFA practices independently of the roles, duties, and responsibilities of a circulating nurse or surgical technologist.

Certifications: Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR); Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA), Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)

Work Experience: Perioperative Nursing 2+ years

Assist surgeon in general and specialized surgeries. Collaborates with surgeons and OR team to ensure needed trays, instrumentation, and supplies are ready for each procedure.

Provide patient care and support

Practice surgical procedures such as controlling bleeding and suturing incisions, draping, providing exposure, and handling tissue.

Educate patient and family on operation and aftercare. Communicate health of patient to family members.

Monitor patient after surgery for pain and/or complications

Study patient history and health assessments.

Monitor surgery site for healing or infection.

Possess ability to scrub and circulate based upon unit needs.

Assist in organization and coordination of supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient and cost-effective department. Charges for equipment and supplies.
