Police / Criminal Investigator – City of Zebulon Police Department

Reports to: Sergeant / Chief of Police or City Administrator.

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt. Classification: Personnel System; requires satisfactory completion of a 6‑month probationary period. Pay Grade: Public Safety. Safety Sensitive: Yes; subject to random drug and alcohol testing per the City of Zebulon Personnel Policy.

Purpose of Job

This position protects and serves the community, enforces federal, state, and local laws, and conducts criminal investigations. Core duties include patrolling assigned areas, responding to emergency calls, conducting investigations and examining crime scenes, safeguarding constitutional rights, apprehending offenders, administering first aid and CPR, investigating vehicle accidents, providing traffic direction, participating in court activities, preparing documentation, and applying community‑oriented, problem‑oriented, and constitutional policing philosophies.

Job Related Requirements

Potential work on religious holidays; regular predictable attendance; cooperative teamwork; vehicle operation responsibilities when applicable.

Emergency Position

Requires attendance under all types of emergency conditions, including inclement weather, civil disturbance, major crime scenes, utility failures, fire, forced evacuations, or incidents as determined by the Chief of Police or City Administrator.

Minimum Training & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of credited service as a Police Officer and two (2) years as a Criminal Investigator.
• At least 21 years of age.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Current certification under the Georgia Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Act and Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act.

Responsibilities

• Patrol and respond to calls for service, including domestic disputes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, and general public service duties.
• Conduct initial and follow‑up investigations, identify and interview persons involved and witnesses, gather evidence, and maintain chain of custody.
• Prepare case files, court exhibits, and legal documents; testify in court and provide evidence to prosecutors.
• Operate and maintain patrol vehicle and all assigned law‑enforcement equipment.
• Administer first aid and CPR; assist motorists and provide traffic direction at events.
• Communicate effectively over radio, telephone, and other technology; provide public assistance and information.
• Assist other law‑enforcement agencies with investigations and share information with federal, state, and local agencies.
• Participate in training, meetings, seminars, and community programs; maintain required training and certifications.
• Maintain compliance with departmental policies, code of ethics, and all relevant laws and regulations.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the commanding officer.

Qualifications

Physical and Medical Requirements (ADA)

• Operate police vehicle, emergency equipment, and other machinery; perform climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and repetitive motions.
• Capable of exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds frequently.
• Must maintain sufficient physical fitness to pursue suspects and engage in physical encounters.
• Adequate vision, hearing, and hand‑eye coordination for use of radios, cameras, and other equipment.
• Ability to read, write, and comprehend official documents and legal materials.
