POSITION SUMMARY:
The Principal Faculty member, as a full-time faculty instructor inthe Physician Assistant (PA) Program, is primarily responsible forhybrid course instruction and/or course coordination in thedidactic and/or clinical phase of the program. This individual isexpected to demonstrate effectiveness in course design, delivery,and evaluation, and plays a critical role in supporting students toachieve the program’s student learning outcomes and thecompetencies required for PA practice.
Under the guidance of the program leadership, the Principal Facultymember contributes to curriculum development, program assessment,and continuous quality improvement in accordance with the ARC-PAAccreditation Standards. This role includes active participation inprogram planning, student advising, academic support, and otheractivities that foster student and programmatic success. Thishybrid faculty role requires on-ground participation in universityactivities, including orientation sessions, immersive courseschedules, remedial activities, graduation ceremonies, and otheruniversity events and activities as required. The Principal Facultymember holds a faculty appointment (rank commensurate withexperience) within the Physician Assistant Program.
In fulfilling the responsibilities of this role, the incumbent isexpected to uphold and promote the philosophy of South University,which emphasizes quality services to students and stakeholders;development, engagement, and recognition of employees; soundeconomic and operational principles; and an environment thatfosters innovation, positive thinking and institutionalgrowth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides teaching and instruction in the PA programincluding:
- Coordination and instruction of hybrid courses as assignedbased on program needs.
- Teaching in areas of clinical and/or professionalexpertise.
- Serving as a faculty advisor to both didactic and clinical yearstudents.
- Assists the Director of Didactic Education in theadministrative coordination of the didactic phase of theprogram.
- Assists the Director of Clinical Education in theadministrative coordination of the clinical phase of theprogram.
- Contributes to curriculum development, including the design andimplementation ofhybrid courses within the program.
- Participates in ongoing curriculum evaluation and continuousquality improvement initiatives.
- Evaluates student performance during objective structuredclinical examinations (OSCEs), lab practicals, clinical reasoningsessions, problem-solving activities, and technical skills trainingand assessment during both the didactic and clinical phases.
- Reviews and evaluates student performance on submittedassignments, projects, and presentations ensuring use of qualityevidence-based resources and citations.
- Develops course examinations and maps exam questions to ARC-PAAccreditation Standards and the NCCPA Content Blueprint to ensurealignment with program learning outcomes.
- Provides input to support accreditation efforts, programself-assessment, and periodic review of the program’s mission andgoals.
- Participates in the program's admissions process to includeattendance at open houses, student recruitment, application review,candidate interviews, and student selection.
- Engages in service, campus and community outreach, ProgramAdvisory Committee (PAC) meetings, and scholarly activitiesappropriate to the role of a full-time Principal Facultymember.
- Participates annually in faculty development opportunitiesfocused on teaching effectiveness and staying current in medicalknowledge.
- Assists with clinical site development, monitoring, andrelationship management as needed to support the clinical phase ofthe program.
- Provides remedial instruction to support student academicsuccess and progression through the program.
- Assists with o ther responsibilities as assigned by theDirectors of Didactic/Clinical Education, the P r ogram Director,or campus leadership.
- P erforms duties as assigned and outlined in the faculty jobdescription and in accordance with the provisions of FacultySupplement to the South University Employee Handbook.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/License/Certification:
- Terminal degree in healthcare disciplines such as physicianassistant, pharmacy, medical doctor, or public health. Minimum of aMaster’s degree is required.
- Eligibility for professional licensure/certification in theapplicable state and healthcare discipline (if applicable) or holdsan active, valid, and unencumbered state license.
- Emeritus clinicians are not required to hold activelicensure.
- PAs must have graduated from an accredited PA program and havecurrent NCCPA certification or emeritus status.
Experience:
- 1-2 years hybrid/online teaching experience in a graduatehealth-related profession highly preferred.
- 2 years of clinical experience required, if applicable.
- Experience in PA/medical classroom teaching preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong interpersonal skills with student and staffpopulations.
- Superior organization, prioritization, and self-motivationskills.
- Strong computer skills, including MS Office Suite, ExamSoft,and WebAdMIT.
- Ability to interact effectively as a member of a team and workcollaboratively with other departments.
- A bility to read, understand, interpret, and implementaccreditation criteria and state agency regulations.
- A bility to resolve inquiries and complaints from employees,students, regulatory agencies, or members of the academic orbusiness community.
- Ability to listen to customers (e.g. staff, students, etc.) andto understand and respond positively to their requests.
- Ability to adapt to changing assignments and multiplepriorities.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and successfully meetdeadlines.
