Full Time Correctional Officer at Outagamie County Jail

Outagamie County Jail is hiring Correctional Officers to supervise inmates and ensure a safe, secure environment.

The jail provides comprehensive services including medical, educational, emotional, spiritual, and nutritional support to help inmates cope with incarceration and reintegrate into the community as productive members.

The facility has 556 beds and a diverse inmate population, including male and female adults, Huber Law/work release inmates, and contract prisoners from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. It ranks as the 7th largest in Wisconsin by capacity.

Hours: 5-3 schedule, 8-hour shifts, with possible 12-hour shifts based on seniority
Location: County Administration Building, 320 S. Walnut St, Appleton

The primary duties include:

  1. Conducting physical checks of inmates and cell areas, monitoring safety and security threats, and taking appropriate action.
  2. Monitoring inmate living areas via camera, conducting inspections, searches, and overseeing recreational and program activities.
  3. Distributing meals, supplies, and escorting inmates to visits and programs.
  4. Maintaining accurate records and writing incident reports.
  5. Restraint and minimal use of force when necessary.
  6. Responding to emergencies according to department policies.
  7. Managing inmate intake, release, and monitoring via GPS.
  8. Controlling access, greeting visitors, and conducting ID checks.
  9. Implementing law enforcement measures within the jail.
  10. Reacting calmly and professionally during crises.
  11. Accepting the physical and emotional demands of the role.

Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma, HSED, or GED.
  • Ability to meet requirements and become Wisconsin Corrections Certified within one year.
  • Successful completion of physical agility, psychological, and physical evaluations.

Additional requirements:

  • Maintaining composure and good judgment, especially in emergencies.
  • Proficiency with department software and office equipment.
  • Physical fitness to meet department standards.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • Mathematical proficiency.
  • Regular attendance and flexibility for overtime.
  • Ability to handle danger and physical tasks up to 50 pounds.
