Job summary

Edgecombe County Public Schools in Tarboro, NC seeks a Full-Time Child Nutrition Assistant to support kitchen operations, food preparation, serving meals, and financial record-keeping. Under supervision, you may serve as cook, cashier, server, or helper and act as PIC when the manager is absent.

Responsibilities include batch cooking, menu review, HACCP compliance, inventory, ordering, deliveries, and maintaining clean storage areas; strong customer service and teamwork are expected.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; 1–2 years of experience in institutional food preparation or childcare.
  • Valid NC driver’s license required and completion of NC bus driver’s license requirements.
  • Physical ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment and lift up to 50 lbs, exert up to 25 lbs force regularly, and stand for hours.
  • Knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, HACCP, storage methods, and equipment operation.
  • Ability to follow recipes, calculate recipe extensions, and use computer for records.
  • Ability to maintain financial records, record time, and operate a time-management system.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer-service skills; ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Capability of working independently, exercising judgment, problem solving, and improving operations.

  • Use batch cooking methods and replenish warming cabinets and serving lines.
  • Ensure safe and sanitary practices following HACCP and health department standards.
  • Review menu and production records daily; order food items to meet portion sizes and production capacity.
  • Assist in ordering, receiving, storing, and preparing food; check deliveries for invoice accuracy.
  • Maintain storage compliance, cleanliness, and organization of food storage areas, performing monthly physical inventories.
  • Provide student meal services, act as cashier, collect payments, and maintain financial integrity.
  • Record and maintain accurate reports of daily and monthly financial, production, and activity records for student meal charges.
  • Maintain accurate records of free and reduced meal rosters; screen applications.
  • Assist with maintenance and sanitation of cafeteria equipment and cleaning.
  • Wrap, label, and put away food after service; record leftovers.
  • Take and record temperatures of food‑holding equipment.
  • Assist with dating and storing deliveries; check deliveries.
  • Follow workplace safety procedures and use PPE.
  • Receive training on the time‑management system and demonstrate usage daily.
  • Serve as Person in Charge (PIC) when the manager is absent, responsible for safe production, service, and handling of all food‑related matters.
  • Establish positive relationships with students, staff, and the public; maintain dress and hygiene standards.
  • Attend workshops, classes, and lectures to enhance food‑service knowledge.
