About Us
The Minnesota Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program advocates for abused and neglected children in court. Our Guardians ad Litem are independent representatives appointed by a judge to advocate for a child's best interests during court proceedings. Since its inception, the program has committed to giving children a strong voice in the judicial system. It is a state agency serving throughout Minnesota.
We are seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-exempt Guardian ad Litem to advocate for children involved in family court cases, including those with allegations of abuse, neglect, or high-conflict custody disputes. The role reports to a Division Coordinator and is managed by the Family Court Division Manager. Candidates must reside near the 1st Judicial District, as travel within the area is required. This is a home-based position serving counties in and around the district, with responsibilities aligned with Minnesota's legal and procedural standards.
Note: Exposure to trauma and conflict is expected due to work with victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.
Knowledge: Family judicial process, child development, and issues surrounding family cases.
Abilities: Professional interaction, critical thinking, relationship building, and crisis management.
Skills: Effective communication, time management, and basic technological proficiency.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience; valid driver's license and residence near the district; ability to pass background checks.
Experience as a Guardian ad Litem and completion of required training are desirable.
This position is remote, requires travel, and candidates must reside near the 1st Judicial District. Benefits include paid holidays, insurance, retirement, and flexible work options. The starting pay is $23.12/hr.
