We’re on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.

About Our Team

The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.

Why This Role Matters

We are looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Subscriptions team at The Washington Post. This role is centered on building and evolving high-quality customer-facing web experiences while contributing across the full application stack. You will own meaningful features and technical work, collaborate on engineering decisions, and help build reliable, maintainable systems that support our subscription products.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript, along with experience in Java - our primary backend language - and Node.js. You should be comfortable working across AWS, CI/CD, production systems, and monorepo-based codebases. We value initiative, collaboration, strong communication, and meaningful day-to-day use of AI-assisted engineering tools to improve development, problem solving, and effectiveness.

What Motivates You
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability for the customer experiences and systems you build.

  • Passionate about creating reliable, performant, accessible, and maintainable web applications.

  • Proactive and comfortable taking ownership of features and technical problems.

  • Interested in working across frontend applications, backend services, cloud infrastructure, and production operations.

  • Actively uses AI as part of day-to-day engineering and looks for new ways to improve development, quality, and productivity.

  • Enjoys collaborating with others, sharing knowledge, and communicating technical ideas clearly.

How You’ll Support the Mission
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and operate customer-facing subscription experiences using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript.

  • Contribute to frontend engineering decisions involving component design, state management, performance, accessibility, testing, and maintainability.

  • Build and integrate with backend services and APIs, primarily in Java, while contributing to Node.js services, tooling, and automation where appropriate.

  • Own features and technical solutions from implementation through deployment, observability, production support, and continuous improvement.

  • Work effectively within monorepo-based codebases, contributing to shared libraries, tooling, build systems, and development practices.

  • Contribute to AWS infrastructure, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and developer tooling that support reliable software delivery.

  • Help operate and improve engineering platforms and services such as Jenkins and Airflow.

  • Participate in the team’s on‑call rotation, including incident response, troubleshooting, and follow‑up improvements.

  • Collaborate with engineers, product partners, and other stakeholders to understand requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and deliver effective solutions.

  • Communicate progress, technical decisions, risks, and dependencies clearly and proactively.

  • Use AI throughout the engineering lifecycle and explore effective ways to apply it to implementation, testing, debugging, investigation, documentation, and automation.

The Skills and Experience You Bring
Minimum Qualifications
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building and supporting production applications.

  • 2+ years of frontend development experience with React and modern JavaScript or TypeScript.

  • Experience building or integrating with backend services and APIs, preferably using Java.

  • Experience with Node.js in areas such as services, APIs, automation, build tooling, or developer tooling.

  • Solid understanding of frontend engineering fundamentals, including component design, state management, testing, performance, accessibility, responsive design, and web standards.

  • Experience working in shared or monorepo-based codebases and contributing to common libraries, dependencies, or development tooling.

  • Familiarity with AWS, CI/CD, and production observability concepts.

  • Experience troubleshooting and supporting production applications.

  • Ability to independently deliver well‑defined features and technical tasks while seeking guidance when working through more complex or unfamiliar problems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, product partners, and other stakeholders.

  • Experience using AI‑assisted engineering tools in day‑to‑day development. Candidates should be able to discuss examples of using AI for coding, debugging, testing, investigation, documentation, automation, or learning.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building production applications.

  • Strong experience with React and modern frontend development.

  • Experience developing backend services or APIs using Java.

  • Experience with Node.js for application development, tooling, or automation.

  • Familiarity with frontend performance, accessibility, testing strategies, design systems, or reusable component architecture.

  • Experience working in monorepos or other shared‑code environments with common libraries, build systems, and dependencies.

  • Experience contributing across frontend applications, backend services, and cloud‑based systems.

  • Familiarity with AWS services, Infrastructure as Code, containerized workloads, or technologies such as ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, IAM, or CloudWatch.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD, observability, or developer platforms such as Jenkins, Airflow, or DataDog.

  • Experience participating in production support or an on‑call rotation.

  • Demonstrated curiosity and practical experience with AI‑assisted engineering, including experimenting with new tools and finding ways to improve development efficiency and quality.
