We are seeking an exceptional product engineer to lead the design and development of our flagship products, collaborating with AI experts to shape the future of human-in-the-loop model understanding and deliver impactful tooling used by governments, academia, and startups.

Qualifications

• Strong design sense and attention to detail.
• Proficient with Python, Typescript, Next.js, AWS, and serverless runtimes.
• Experience engaging with customers and stakeholders.
• Bonus: familiarity with language models and ML concepts.

Responsibilities

• Design and build intuitive frontend interfaces for model understanding.
• Implement scalable backend systems to power those interfaces.
• Create APIs, SDKs, and protocols interfacing between products and external libraries.
• Engage with customers to gather requirements and feedback.
• Maintain open source repositories and engage with the developer community.

Salary range: $250,000 - $500,000 + benefits

Description: Transluce is a fast-paced AI start-up building the public tech stack for understanding and debugging AI systems. We build world-class, AI-backed analysis tools and use these to set industry standards for evaluation. We are a non-profit with a mission to steer the development of AI for the public good.

About the role: We're looking for an exceptional product engineer to lead the design and development of our flagship products. You will have a central seat at the table and work directly with leading experts in AI to shape the future of human-in-the-loop model understanding.

As a mission-focused non-profit, you’ll also contribute to software with high direct impact (used by governments to inform AI policy) and cross-organizational reach (our stakeholders lie across frontier labs, academia, and startups).

Core responsibilities:

• Design and build intuitive frontend interfaces for model understanding, such as:
  • Docent, for analyzing long agent transcripts
  • Monitor, for understanding internal model activations
• Implement scalable backend systems to power those interfaces
• Create APIs, SDKs, and protocols that interface between our products and external libraries
• Engage continuously with customers to gather requirements and feedback
• Maintain open source repositories and actively engage with the developer community

Qualities of a strong candidate:

• Excels in rapid cycles of design, implementation, testing, and iteration
• Has strong design taste and a sharp attention to detail
• Writes well-designed code that enables team-wide collaboration
• Is proficient with our current stack: Python, Typescript, Next.js, AWS, serverless container runtimes
• Has experience engaging with customers and stakeholders
• Bonus: practical experience with language models (e.g., building apps on top of LLM APIs) and familiarity with fundamental ML concepts (e.g., ability to critically assess claims about model performance)
