Job summary

Pivotal is seeking a Full Stack Data Engineer to build the internal applications that surface flight data for engineers. You’ll work across the stack—from backend Python services and HTTP APIs to front-end dashboards—enabling interactive exploration of large datasets and AI-assisted tooling.

The role emphasizes ownership, collaboration, and shipping tools that help teams understand aircraft performance and maintain systems in real time. This onsite role is in Palo Alto, CA.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional experience building and shipping web applications, backend through front end.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proficient in Python, and comfortable writing SQL against a real database.
• Experience with a modern JavaScript or TypeScript front-end framework (React, Vue, or similar).
• Has built and consumed HTTP APIs, including authentication, pagination, and error handling.
• Comfortable with Git-based workflows, code review, and CI/CD.
• Can sit with a non-software engineer, work out what they actually need, and ship it.

Responsibilities

• Internal applications: Build and maintain the internal web applications engineers use to work with flight data.
• Backend services: Develop Python services and HTTP APIs that query data stores and return results quickly.
• Front end: Build interfaces for large telemetry datasets with filters and time-series plots.
• AI-assisted diagnosis: Create tooling to ask questions in plain language and trace results to data.
• Self-serve analysis: Turn recurring analyses into supported, self-serve tools.
• Data catalog: Generate internal field guides and ensure metadata accuracy.
• Alert review: Build fleet health review surfaces with history and trend views.
• Tooling distribution: Package analysis tools to run on engineers' laptops, including Windows.
• Ownership: Handle tests, code review, CI/CD, and monitoring.
• Collaboration: Work with engineers to scope needs and document shipping details.
