Job summary

Periodic in Menlo Park, CA recruits a Midtraining Research Engineer to advance frontier models for scientific discovery. You will curate data, build evals, and run large-scale training experiments that lay groundwork for our pre-training efforts.

You will collaborate with RL researchers, physicists, and chemists, applying self-distillation and on-policy distillation, while scaling training across thousands of GPUs to push model intelligence forward.

Qualifications

• Experience training LLMs on curated data
• Experience on a dedicated evals team
• Hands-on self-distillation or on-policy distillation in a real pipeline
• Experience with scaling laws and compute-optimal hyperparameters
• Comfort working across data, evals, and training infrastructure

Responsibilities

• Identify, process, and curate novel data sources for large-scale model training
• Generate synthetic data to fill gaps in scientific knowledge
• Build evaluations that correlate with performance on scientific tasks
• Develop and apply distillation techniques to improve model capability
• Design and run large-scale training experiments across thousands of GPUs
• Build tools to investigate data choices and model intelligence
